6 teens killed, 2 hurt in northeast Ohio SUV crash

Source: AP-Excite

By THOMAS J. SHEERAN

WARREN, Ohio (AP) - Highway Patrol officials say speed was a factor in the violent early morning crash of a sports utility vehicle that killed six teenagers in the northeast Ohio.

Ohio Highway Patrol Lt. Brian Holt says at a Sunday night news conference that he wouldn't estimate the speed the Honda Passport was traveling when it crashed into a guardrail and flipped over into a swampy pond at about 7 a.m. Sunday. He says that speed was an issue with the SUV that was carrying eight teenagers.

Holt says he isn't sure what the speed limit on the two-lane road is and wouldn't estimate the speed that the SUV was traveling. He also says he won't comment on whether alcohol or drugs were involved.

State troopers showed off the wrecked vehicle, the windows cracked and with the most extensive damage to the front end, hood and roof.

I just drove near there today on my way to a buddy's house.

I couldn't believe when my friend called about then and told me about it. I figured she got the story wrong, because even in the of worst accidents, only a couple get killed and the rest survive.

Tragic.

on edit:
Local news now says the young girl, Alexis Cayson, was driving. It was on Pine Ave, not N Park as the article states.

Kids are handling tons of metal that go at horrific speeds and the part of their brain that understands consequences isn't developed until age 25.

In the UK new drivers must display a Green L plate to show they have only just passed their test and penalties for younger drivers are pretty strict. It's far from unknown for a licence to be revoked and they must resit the test. New drivers IIRC are allowed only 6 points rather than the 12 for experienced drivers before they get a one year ban.

All that said why on earth were 8 teens in a car early Sunday morning!?
Knowing Warren I suspect weed and/or alcohol were involved and/or maybe just inexperience and peer pressure .. a waste of life regardless.

RIP

These are Darwin Award candidates.

Stuffing 8 teenagers into an SUV, and none of them wore seat belts.

Add to that the driver was speeding.

Teenagers can be fatally stupid.
I should know, I was a teenager, and we stuffed a dozen kids into a van (not minivan) that had only the driver's seat, to go sledding.
The rest of us sat on the van floor.

I was a very active girl and was always doing something that could have either seriously injured me or worse, such as going very fast down a long hill on a bike with no breaks and doing a somersault over the bike. Luckily, some bushes cushioned my fall. I made it out with only scraped knees, the poor bike was another story. Like a dummy I thought that it was fun and would have probably done it again, except that the bike was in bad shape.

Kids...........

My partner called Sunday to tell me about this, she's tough but distraught as she knew many of the kids.
She's works in Culinary Arts at Warren High but doubles as a Counselor so it's going to be tough.

Many teachers were called back to School early on Sunday.

My heart goes out to the kids, families, friends and teaching staff and not to forget the first responders.

RIP

(CNN) -- Six teenagers were killed and two other people were injured when the SUV they were in struck a guardrail, turned over and went into a pond, officials said.

The single-vehicle accident took place near Warren, in northeastern Ohio, on Sunday morning, according to Lt. Anne Ralston of the Ohio Department of Public Safety.

The teens, age 14 to 19, were traveling in a Honda Passport.

Restrictions on who can and can't purchase an SUV.

Make existing suv's safer by banning engines larger then 10 cylinders. (Any one who has a cummings turbo diesel V12 is obviously up to no good)

Limit the speed of SUV's to 65 mph via a Governor on the engine.

Make some one walk in front of them ringing a bell.

Over board? Really?

I feel for the kids. All the kids. The ones killed by mental illness/gun violence, and the ones killed in auto accidents. I don't know the right answers. So much tragedy these days. So sad, all of it.
