Venezuela's Maduro urges Obama to halt "plot" against rival
Source: Reuters
Venezuela's acting president urged U.S. President Barack Obama to stop what he called a plot by the Pentagon and the Central Intelligence Agency to kill his opposition rival and trigger a coup ahead of an April 14 election.
Nicolas Maduro said the plan was to blame his opponent's murder on the OPEC nation's government and to "fill Venezuelans with hate" as they prepare to vote following the death of socialist leader Hugo Chavez.
The United States denied the claim. "We categorically reject allegations of U.S. government involvement in any plot to harm anyone in Venezuela," State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said.
Maduro, a 50-year-old former bus driver and union leader, first mentioned a plot against his rival, Henrique Capriles, last week. He blamed it on former Bush administration officials Roger Noriega and Otto Reich. Both rejected the allegations as untrue, outrageous and defamatory.

(62,276 posts)Maduro is an insane power seeker surrounded by the same corrupt government managers that Chavez allowed in his midst. Except he benefited from Chavez' poor management skills and proclivity toward cronyism (Maduro should've been demoted or fired when he used the atrocious F word epithet). This means that rather than clean house, as Chavez should've done before dying, he will allow it to spiral out of control.
And the rhetoric is only going to get nastier and more bizarre from here on out.

(24,010 posts)...DUers and most north Americans don't know. The most important of them is that Nicolas Maduro was Chavez's foreign minister during the formation of Celac, UNASUR, ALBA and other seminal Latin American organizations--organizations of overwhelming political and historical importance. This is recognized all over Latin America and by all of its leaders, left, right and center. Venezuela pioneered this independence revolution and Maduro was on of its chief architects!
Thank you for these key insights into who Maduro is and of course why Chavez favored him as his successor. And thank you for getting it out there in an excellent article! Our people are so-o-o-o misinformed and disinformed about Venezuela and Latin America, it is pitiful!

Trying to smear him well before the Venezuelan President had died. (This was also during the time various right-wing posters were scraping the bottom of their bottomless barrel of slime with their worthless speculation that Chavez had already died and Maduro and the rest of Chavez' administration were covering it all up so they could still run the government without having to allow the opposition candidate to campaign for the position in another election.)
These people threw themselves with the fury of madmen against Maduro's image, hysterically hacking away, hoping to destroy him long before anyone in the US general population got a good chance to learn more about him, hoping they could get people to settle for their malicious right-wing venomous slurs.
They leaped into view fully furious, murderously hate-filled, ready to transfer all that hatred they had flung at Chavez right over to the next president the people of Venezuela will probably elect, without missing a beat. If something happens to Maduro, we ALL know them well enough to see the writing on the wall: they'll be waiting, all coiled up in their individual piles of goo ready to leap at the next one the Venezuelan PEOPLE, not the oligarchs, hope to see as their President.
Thank you so much for sharing that link to your Daily Kos article. Very glad to have read it.

So one can't put it past the chavistas to try to murder Capriles because there is evidence that their past behavior supports assassination of Presidential candidates.
However, there exist no evidence that Obama would like to assassinate Presidential candidates. And if he wanted to do so, he'd just use a drone as he has with US citizens.

I do not think that Chavez ordered a hit on Capriles but the way the assassination attempt was handled left a lot to be desired. Berroterán Alexander walked free. This language by the homophobic bigot Maduro could be construed as a call to arms to other chavistas like Berroterán Alexander. They know that if they kill Capriles then the state can use this "we said it was going to happen" excuse. The people arrested, if any, would of course be easily tied somehow to right wing groups in the US.

(94 posts)As a retired American lawyer I lived and taught in Venezuela for the last six years. If Madura says that the Noriega and Reich are plotting to kill Capriles, believe him. pThe U.S. State Department has consistently demonized President Chavez because he told the truth to the people about the actions of the U.S. government and its capitalist owners, the big corporations. Years ago they wanted to control the countries of Latin America to protect their huge fruit farms, now they are doing the same in order to control their oil. Chavez and his socialist government represent a serious threat to corporate profits, thus the U.S. had to try to portray Chavez (and now Maduro) into a buffoon or a dictator sy o the American people would not see that their brand of socialism really improves the lives of the majority of the people.
Both Noriega and Reich who Maduro accuses of plotting to kill the opposition presidential candidate, Henrique Capriles, have supported the very worst atrocities committed by the U.S. in Latin America. They repeatedly supported terrorists, such as those who bombed the Cuban air plane line which killed everyone on board, including many young athletes. The U.S. Congress's Church Committee documented that our CIA made more than 100 attempts to kill Cuba's Fidel Castro, even using some absolutely absurd methods to do so, including poisoned cigars and poisoned wet suits. Castro is still alive, no thanks to the terrorists that Noriega and Reich coordinated with. Along with the U.S. ambassador to Honduras, John Negroponte, both were instrumental in creating the Contra forces in order to take down the democratically elected Sandinista government in Nicaragua in the 1980's. They would stop at nothing to protect their profitable economic interests, including murder. By killing Capriles, they hope to provoke a crisis and provide an excuse for the U.S. to invade Venezuela.
You might be interested in reading an article I posted today on President Chavez and Nicolas Maduro's successful efforts to unite Latin American countries so they can be independent of U.S. imperialist control.i
The majority of countries in Latin America and the majority of their people have applauded and respected Chavez and Maduro for their efforts to improve the economic and political reality in Latin America. That is why at least 33 latin America countries have joined with Chavez and Maduro to form the CELAC organization, modeled on the European Union, which provides funds to developing countries without the harsh austerity measures demanded by the U.S. controlled International Monetary Fund. They seek real independence and autonomy, not their old puppet relations with the U.S. Neither the U.S. or Canada was invited to join CELAC. See my post today:

(160,598 posts)how to craft vicious, dirty, classist, malicious gems like this in the conspicuously venemous creation being passed as a "news" article:
Even in his smarter attire, Maduro used to elbow through reporters to get to the appetizer table before presidential news conferences.
Absolutely breathtaking. How lame can anyone possibly be to not smell this article a mile away. It all seems to fly right past them. This is NOT a news story.
You're right in your remark that there is very little of real substance there that can actually intelligently be grasped as legitimate criticism of the man.
It was time so long ago for the U.S. to stop playing god and destroying so many peoples' lives. The countries belong to their citizens, not a group of idle, idiot, greedy assholes who have far too much time on their hands and refuse to use it productively right where THEY LIVE.
Corporate propaganda media specialists, HANDS OFF OTHER COUNTRIES. Leave their people the #### alone, butt out, stop handing the idiots fodder for their campaigns against Latin American leaders our ugliest, greediest, dirtiest politicians want us to hate.
If the U.S. powers can't hear what Latin American citizens have been telling us for so many decades, there is no longer any excuse to hide behind now. We don't have any right to keep agitating against elected governments in other countries, as these clowns try to concoct rationales for invading them, murdering the citizens, seizing the assets. It's long past time the world didn't see through that already. It's an old, dirty, sleazy, filthy routine, and no amount of flag-waving, chest-thumping, or agitating against other countries' leaders can ever be forgiven.

My extensive library is nearly one full wall of Latin American history with over 50 books on Che, one of my all time heroes.
I was of a handful here at the DU to oppose the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, never mind the invasion of Iraq.
From my earliest posts here, I made it clear all those years ago and since I am a socialist.
What I don't want, and I hope you don't want, is civil war in Venezuela. I have faith in the people there. They can sort this out on their own. Just because Hugo pretty much handpicked his successor, doesn't mean that's some sort of anointment. Even the cardinals in the Vatican had a more democratic choosing than this.
The people of Venezuela, along with those in most Latin American countries are not bedazzled by the U.S. anymore. They have grown up democracies and most all are left to leaning left.

Sathya Sai Baba
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
... On 17 June 2011, officials from the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust (founded as a charitable Trust in India, and legally separate from religious activities),[63] opened his private residence in the presence of government, bank and tax department officials, including retired Supreme Court Judge A P Mishra and retired judge of Karnataka High Court Vaidyanatha, an assessor approved by the Income Tax Department, and former Chief Justice of India P N Bhagavati.[64] In the private residence, which had been sealed since his death, they inventoried 98 kg of gold ornaments, approximate value Rs 21 crore (US$4.7m), 307 kg of silver ornaments, approximate value Rs 1.6 crore (US$0.36m), and Rs 11.6 crore (US$2.6m) in cash. The cash was deposited into the Sai Trust's account at the State Bank of India with payment of government taxes (thus transferring them from religious gifts to Trust assets.) The gold and other items were inventoried, assessed, and placed in secure storage. In July, district authorities found an additional Rs 77 lakh (US$0.17m) in valuables in another 4 rooms.[65] The total value is believed to exceed 7.8 million US dollars.[66]
Also found at Yajurmandir were many articles routinely given away as gifts in various ceremonies to devotees and those who performed selfless service, including thousands of pure silk sarees, dhotis, shirts, 500 pairs of shoes, dozens of bottles of perfume and hairspray, watches, a large number of silver and gold mangala sutrams, and precious stones such as diamonds. There were also 750 saffron and white robes of the type Sai Baba wore.[67] In July 2011, a similar opening of his Bangalore-area ashram found 6 kg of gold coins and jewellery, 245 kg of silver articles and Rs 80 lakh in cash. These goods were believed to have been donated over the years by Sathya Sai Baba's devotees from all over the world. ....
In 2004, the BBC produced a documentary titled The Secret Swami, as part of its series "The World Uncovered".[143] One central theme of the BBC documentary was again Alaya Rahm's sexual abuse allegations against Sathya Sai Baba.[144] This documentary interviewed him together with Mark Roche, who had spent 25 years of his life since 1969 in the movement and alleged abuse by Sai Baba.[144] The show also featured allegations from Sai Baba critic Basava Premanand. Premanand stated in the documentary that, in his opinion, Sai Baba faked his materialisations. Here, he claimed that Sathya Sai Baba was "not just a fraud, but a dangerous sexual abuser". According to his interview, he had stories which spanned 30 years, and he stated that his stories were similar, a common practice being the rubbing of genitals with oil by the spiritual leader. Among his claims were that one ex-devotee claimed Sai Baba "put the oil on his hands, told me to drop my pants and rubbed my genitals with the oil". Premanand theorised that many Indian boys were abused but were never heard from because they too afraid to speak out, alleging Sai Baba was well-connected with the elite and powerful of India.[126 ....

The mastermind he specifically mentioned was Otto Reich. "firm and continuing policy" "efforts in this regard will continue vigorously beyond this date", "implemented clandestinely and securely so that the USG and American hand be well hidden" apply to the government of Venezuela also. The week Chavez died, the Venezuelans caught 2 US attaches trying to get Venezuelan military personnel to commit treason against their countrymen. The military attaches were expelled from the country. And the US, in a vindictive tit-for-tat move, expelled 2 diplomats. The evidence wasn't released but I don't think Maduro is talking out of his ass.
Before the coup against President Allende of Chile, Allende too accused the US of assassinating his conservative opponent, former Chilean Cabinet Minister, Edmundo Pérez Zujovic. Perez's assassination by the anarchist group, "Vanguardia Organizada del Pueblo", was used as a justification for the 1973 Coup d'état.
Rinse, lather, repeat. Oh but we would never!
"It is firm and continuing policy that Allende be overthrown by a coup. It would be much preferable to have this transpire prior to 24 October but efforts in this regard will continue vigorously beyond this date. We are to continue to generate maximum pressure toward this end, utilizing every appropriate resource. It is imperative that these actions be implemented clandestinely and securely so that the USG and American hand be well hidden..." Henry Kissinger in a communique to the CIA base in Chile, 16 oktober, 1970.
I don't see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist due to the irresponsibility of its own people. The issues are much too important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves."
Henry Kissinger
Sun Feb-20-11
Just to be VERY CLEAR, for those who don't know this history or don't have time to read the whole article--the U.S./Nixon administration was thickly involved in the events in Chile in the 1970s, whereby Chilean voters were overthrown--not just the government--but the sovereign people of Chile and their right to have a government of their choice, was overthrown. DEMOCRACY was overthrown. On the fear--on the FEAR, not the reality, the FEAR--that a socialist government MIGHT ally with the Soviet Union--the U.S. supported, aided and abetted this horribly violent coup d'etat and the horrors afterwards--the tortures and murders of thousands of people for their political views.
This U.S. policy in Latin America has hardly changed in forty years. Thousands of trade unionists, human rights workers, teachers, community activists, peasant farmers and others have been slaughtered by the Colombian military (with $7 BILLION in U.S. military aid) and by its rightwing paramilitary death squads, with the Bush Junta tool in Colombia, Alvaro Uribe, stating publicly that everyone who opposed him is a "terrorist," while he himself is filthy dirty with ties to the death squads and the trillion dollar cocaine trade. This criminal is now under the protection of the CIA and the Obama administration, which have arranged for the removal of witnesses against Uribe from Colombia, out of the reach of Colombian prosecutors and over their objections. They furthermore have set him up with cushy academic sinecures at Georgetown and Harvard and appointment to a prestigious international legal commission.
And now the same thing is starting in Honduras, where the U.S.-backed, fascist coup government--with only the thinnest smear of democracy cosmetics provided by Hillary Clinton--is ignoring the murders of numerous anti-coup organizers and the rapes, beatings and tortures of others. While the military and the death squads decapitate the leftist leadership in these countries, in preparation for U.S. "free trade for the rich," the corrupt, murderous, failed U.S. "war on drugs" is additionally used to militarize and brutalize society--under way now, in Mexico, with new ops in Honduras as well. This latter--the "war on drugs"--is likely also being used to consolidate the cocaine trade under Bush Cartel/CIA control (i.e., smashing independent operations and protecting those who are "players" . This trillion dollar-plus revenue stream provides massive illicit funds for god-knows-who and god-knows-what, as well as providing liquidity to the banksters. But one thing that the U.S. "war on drugs" does NOT do, and NEVER WILL do, is stop the cocaine trade.
Nixon started the U.S. "war on drugs" while his regime was destroying Chilean democracy and the two things are very related. The U.S. "war on drugs" provided the method of continued control of Latin American countries, with vast corruption, brutalization and direct U.S. funding of the fascists and the militarists. It also provided a substitute "war" for our war profiteers, since Nixon-Kissinger were being forced to wind down the war on Vietnam, because, a) the people of the U.S. were rebelling against it, and b) the Vietnamese--those 'little brown people' in straw hats and sandals, who were fighting for their independence--were winning against the biggest war machine on earth. (Their democracy had also been destroyed when the U.S. forbade a UN-sponsored election in 1954--an election that independence hero Ho Chi Minh would have won.)
The use of the U.S. "war on drugs" to destroy democracy in Latin America continues to this day and has never been more intense. In September 2008, when the U.S. embassy was funding/organizing a white separatist insurrection in Bolivia, Bolivia's president, Evo Morales, not only threw the U.S. ambassador out of the country, he threw the DEA out of Bolivia, because they, too, were colluding with the white separatists. After defeating the insurrection, with the unanimous backing of South American countries, via UNASUR (an EU-type regional institution that had been formalized only that very summer), Bolivia then proceeded with its vote on Bolivia's new constitution (overwhelmingly popular, written by the people) which legalizes and protects the coca leaf (not cocaine) as a sacred Indigenous medicine. After Venezuela, Bolivia is the no. 1 target of the U.S. for this reason. It has rebelled against the U.S. "war on drugs"--the prime U.S. method of control--by opting for a SANE drug policy and legalizing the coca leaf (somewhat comparable to legaling marijuana here--another harmless and beneficial herb). This legalization calls into question the entire brutal edifice of control that has been operating since Nixon, and that the Obama administration fully supports--a policy that is costing us, all told, probably a trillion dollars--to war profiteers, Pentagon bases in Latin America, the "prison-industrial complex," our own police state and related corruption (for instance, pesticides to spray on food farms in Latin America, to drive the peasants off their land--land then goes to the preferred drug lords, Monsanto, etc.)
Let me just tell you what one of the Honduran coup generals said about their recent coup (June 2009)--a coup that the Obama administration abetted and secured. He said that their coup was intended "to prevent communism from Venezuela reaching the United States" (quoted in a report on the coup by the Zelaya government-in-exile).
Nothing has changed. Policies that benefit the poor, and democratic processes that enable the vast poor majority to elect governments that act in their interest, are STILL considered "communist" is some circles, and those who truly rule the U.S.--transglobal corporations and war profiteers--are STILL determined to exterminate those policies and those democratic processes and the leaders who represent them. The U.S. "war on drugs" is the chief means being used to that end, supplemented by multi-millions of our tax dollars being funneled to rightwing groups throughout Latin America, through agencies like the USAID and entities like the Pentagon, on top of unknown amounts of covert money, some of it directly out of our pockets and some from illicit revenue streams.
And the cocaine just keeps on flowing.

They're not giving enough details. When it comes to Venezuela, the whole US government, the oil sector and the investment sector agree and I'm sure there are several plots, at different levels, from different groups, to destabilize and appropriate.
Merida, March 5th 2013 (Venezuelanalysis.com) Vice-president Nicolas Maduro today denounced destabilisation plans by the international and Venezuelan right wing, announcing the expulsion of two US officials for threatening military security. He also implied that Chavezs cancer was caused by enemies of Venezuela.
Right-wing destabilisation plans
Maduro made the announcement today just after midday, following a meeting this morning with Venezuela's political military leadership.
Maduro pronounced the expulsion of Air Attaché David Delmonaco, and assistant Air Attaché Devlin Costal of the US embassy in Caracas for being implicated in conspiracy plans.
They have 24 hours to pack their bags and leave, Maduro said.
He explained that Monaco had, for the last few weeks, been contacting members of the Venezuelan military in order to bring about a destabilisation plan in Venezuela.
This official has been given the task of looking for active military members in Venezuela in order to propose destabilisation projects to the Armed Forces.
