Elizabeth Colbert Busch wins South Carolina Democratic primary

Source: The Guardian

Ewen MacAskill

Elizabeth Colbert Busch, the sister of comedian Stephen Colbert, has won the Democratic nomination for a South Carolina House seat by a landslide, while the former state governor Mark Sanford will progress to a Republican run-off.

Polling took place on Tuesday in a US congressional primary race that threw together a colourful cast of candidates including Colbert Busch, whose brother joined her on the campaign trail; Ted Turner's son; and a former governor of the state who once gave new meaning to "hiking the Appalachian trail".

The primary, to select nominees for South Carolina's first district congressional seat, drew a crowded field, with two contenders for the Democratic nomination and 16 for the Republican. Colbert Busch, a businesswoman who is on the staff of Clemson University, lived up to her status as favourite to secure the Democratic nomination and was boosted by her brother's campaigning. Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert, who rarely abandons his satirical conservative persona in public, told CNN's Jake Tapper on Monday: "I'm willing to, you know, break the jewel of my own creation to try to do something for her.

"I'm not worried about what it would do to me or my show to try to help her as myself – not as my character, to help her as myself. And you know, if people think that's not the right thing for me to do, I don't care. It's my sister, and I'm willing to help her."

Elizabeth Colbert-Busch Wins South Carolina Dem Primary, Mark Sanford Advances To GOP Runoff

Elizabeth Colbert-Busch has won the Democratic primary in South Carolina’s 1st district for this year’s special election. Colbert-Busch won by an overwhelming margin and now moves on to the general election, where it looks like her potential opponent will, in fact, be former governor Mark Sanford. Sanford won a plurality of the Republican votes, but because he did not get a clear majority, he will move to a runoff election.

Colbert-Busch won the Democratic primary against Ben Frasier with roughly 96 percent of the vote. Her campaign got a big boost in no small part due to promotion on the air and off by her famous brother, comedian Stephen Colbert.

Meanwhile, Sanford is continuing his truly unique political comeback after his infamous sex scandal in 2009. He won the Republican primary with 37 percent of the vote, but is now moving to a runoff. His opponent in that race has yet to be determined.

p.s. On the GOP side - Looks like Sanford will have a run-off with either 'Grooms' or 'Bostic' depending on what the recount results are.

I think I may have SOME hope for ECB's district. Do people really want the also-ran cheater Mark Sanford back in office (Sanford also represented that district early in the 2000s before becoming SC state governor). Given the clown show of the GOP primary from Sanford to a bunch of crazier folk I think 2013 woke up some over there.

Former Gov. Mark Sanford will be in a runoff for the Republican nomination in the 1st Congressional District, but it was unclear who he would face in the April 2 GOP election.

With 99 percent of the precincts reporting tonight, Sanford had 37 percent of the vote. The race for second and a place in the April 2 runoff was a tight one between Curtis Bostic with 6,989 votes and Larry Grooms with 6,596.

How does our third-way contingent explain that? Garnering 96% of the vote, even for a primary election, is undeniably quite an achievement. Perhaps the meme of needing conservative third way dems to be competitive in red states is quite simply, just a myth.
