University of Tennessee pulls Sex Week funding

NASHVILLE — Hoping to quell a rising uproar among conservative legislators, UT Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek said Wednesday the campus no longer will use state tax or tuition funds for a controversial event called "Sex Week."

Sex Week will keep $6,700 in student programming dollars but $11,145 from academic programs and departments no longer will be available.

The annual event seeks to highlight sexual health, sexual identity, preventing sexual assault and gender roles. This year, Sex Week features a lesbian bondage expert and a campuswide hunt for a "golden condom."

Social conservatives have been astir at the news. Sen. Stacey Campfield, R-Knoxville, threatened to haul DiPietro before the Senate Education Committee in a blog post over the weekend.

State Rep. Bill Dunn, R-Knoxville, had cited some of Sex Week’s more salacious workshop topics — “getting laid,” “sex positivity,” and “queer as a bug,” — in a House floor speech Monday night. He said legislators should step in to protect Christians from such offensive behaviors from campus organizations.

Other events include free HIV testing, a workshop on preventing sexual assault, discussions on abstinence and “concepts of virginity,” tips on talking to your parents and your doctors about sex and several panels on faith and sexuality, some backed by campus religious organizations such as Campus Crusade for Christ.

State Sen. Stacey Campfield, R-Knoxville, suggested that the Senate Education Committee should reconsider its approval of UT’s budget for the coming year.

Both Campfield’s and Dunn’s comments came in response to a recent Fox News report on Sex Week, which is being organized by Sexual Empowerment and Awareness at Tennessee.

On a college campus, we're talking about adults. If seventeen and older isn't time to educate people about sex, doesn't it make it conclusive that Conservatives advocate ignorance?
