New images confirm Big Bang theory
Source: The Telegraph
The "map" of light originating from the dawn of time, captured by the £515m Planck space telescope, reveals patterns which scientists say confirm that the universe began with a Big Bang.
But it also contains subtle differences which contradict certain elements of the Standard Model of cosmology, meaning theories will have to be tweaked.
The images, released on Thursday, suggest that at 13.84 billion years the universe is older than previously thought - albeit by only 48 million years.
They also suggest it contains slightly more matter than expected and a little less "dark energy", the mysterious force which is believed to drive the expansion of the universe.

You couldn't tell those people the sky is blue if their silly religion claimed it was orange.

(4,788 posts)Shortest form: Satan did it.
Shorter form: God did it to test our faith.
Longer form: In an effort to weaken and destroy our faith in the unchanging and revealed Word of God, the Devil created bogus information that the godless and unbelieving scientists think supports their godless theories on the origin of the universe.

Even the warm & fuzzy "Mother Nature God Spiritual stuff" blah blah
All can be explained by science-
We know why the flowers bloom, we know how the continents were formed, we know what "shooting stars" really are. All of that knowledge should be overwhelming and magical in itself without having to assign spirits or "gods" to it

(7,947 posts)I guess it's still funny.
Civilization and religion are intertwined, and both are similar to any organized effort.
Civilization comes around about 6, 7, 10 thousand years ago, give or take. Who's counting at that point. Some religions say the planet is that old, because that's when organized religion starts popping up. Crazy coincidence.
Aren't we supposed to have dominion over the Earth and all that too? We do do that, right? We're not giving up the grip on increasing our total control of everything any time soon. So whoever said or wrote that had the right idea it seems.

Irrefutable = Impossible to deny or disprove.
As of this latest observation, no one can deny or disprove it. (Many will try to deny it, no doubt.)

Our whole universe was in a hot dense state,
Then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started. Wait...
The Earth began to cool,
The autotrophs began to drool,
Neanderthals developed tools,
We built a wall (we built the pyramids),
Math, science, history, unraveling the mysteries,
That all started with the big bang!
"Since the dawn of man" is really not that long,
As every galaxy was formed in less time than it takes to sing this song.
A fraction of a second and the elements were made.
The bipeds stood up straight,
The dinosaurs all met their fate,
They tried to leap but they were late
And they all died (they froze their asses off)
The oceans and Pangea
See ya wouldn't wanna be ya
Set in motion by the same big bang!
It all started with the big BANG!
It's expanding ever outward but one day
It will pause and start to go the other way,
Collapsing ever inward, we won't be here, it won't be heard
Our best and brightest figure that it'll make an even bigger bang!
Australopithecus would really have been sick of us
Debating how we're here, they're catching deer (we're catching viruses)
Religion or astronomy (Descartes or Deuteronomy)
It all started with the big bang!
Music and mythology, Einstein and astrology
It all started with the big bang!
It all started with the big BANG!

An actual NASA page has its closest pass in 2080 as 0.12 Astronomical Units, ie about 18 million km (compared to 0.00022 AU this February). The next pass that's similar to this year's is 2123 - 0.0002 AU.
