GLADD Affirms Commitment To Trans and Bi People, Alters Name

Source: Advocate

On Sunday, March 24, GLADD spokesperson Wilson Cruz appeared on MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry to affirm the organization has formally dropped the ‘Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’ from their name and will now be known simply as GLADD, the LGBT media advocacy organization.

The name change brings with it a commitment form the organization to incorporate trans and bi people in their efforts to support the LGBT community in its entirety.

On the one hand, it's still an acronym that frequently gets misspelled, and they haven't changed the letters; any time anyone asks what the letters mean, they'll get the historical name. But for an organization whose goals include equality and inclusiveness, making its name more inclusive makes sense.

Was it silly for AT&T to stop calling itself American Telephone and Telegraph? Times change, and sometimes it helps if names do, too. Some have called for NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) and UNCF (United Negro College fund) to change their names as well.

AT&T too. So what if telegraphs don't account for their business now - it conveys their history. It's not directly comparable, but the whole trend toward meaningless pseudo-acronyms or abbreviations just grates on me: "KFC" instead of "Kentucky Fried Chicken," etc.

As for GLAAD, it wasn't always GLAAD - it used to be Gay and Lesbian Anti-Defamation League. So if they want to change the name to better reflect scope of work, why not just really change the name entirely?

I think "Advancement of Colored People" is ignorant, not historical. I wish that would go away as much as the American Football team know as the Washington "Redskins". Those are two of the most atrocious public ally accepted (names for) institutions that I can find examples of.

What the hell kind of mixed messages do we give our youth?

Anywho...

Kentucky Fried Chicken to KFC.

Organizations do this all the time. No big whoop.
