Japanese Utility Takes Blame for Nuclear Crisis

Source: Associate Press

The utility that operates Japan's crippled nuclear plant says it deserves most of the blame for the crisis, in the company's strongest remarks about its own shortcomings.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. acknowledged in a report Friday that it was not prepared to deal with the earthquake and tsunami that ravaged northeast Japan in March 2011, causing meltdowns at its Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant. TEPCO had earlier maintained that the tsunami was mostly to blame for the crisis.

The report said that TEPCO's equipment and safety measures were insufficient and that the meltdowns should have been avoided. It also said TEPCO did not try to inform the public of risks and troubles at the plant.

The report is part of an internal investigation into the crisis that TEPCO launched last year.

2. TEPCO tell the truth?

Here's a little truth...shoddy workmanship, pipes that supplied cooling water were welded under great stress, they never lined up as designed/engineered but were held in place with heavy equipment and then welded. These were the first to burst/snap when the earthquake hit. The tsunami wiped out the back-up generators that were tasked to keep the pumps going, but it mattered little since the network of cooling water piping was already destroyed.
Safety inspections were falsified over and over. The entire facility is a catastrophic disaster beyond comprehension .
There is no end or solution in sight. The technology to fix this is not even invented yet. They are "winging" it, basically treading water and praying there is not yet another severe earthquake that brings the rest of the damaged structures down in a pile of untouchable rubble.

Meanwhile, one third of the little children tested in the close vicinity already have growths on their thyroids.

Fukushima Disaster: TEPCO Takes Most Of Blame For Nuclear Meltdown

By MARI YAMAGUCHI 03/29/13 09:59 AM ET EDT

<snip>

"Our safety culture, skills and ability were all insufficient," TEPCO President Naomi Hirose told a news conference. "We must humbly accept our failure to prevent the accident, which we should have avoided by using our wisdom and human resources to be better prepared."

<snip>

The acknowledgement is a major reversal from TEPCO's initial investigation report.

In the June 2012 report, TEPCO maintained that the tsunami was mostly to blame for the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986. It defended its crisis management and criticized excessive interference from the Prime Minister's Office.

<snip>

Critics have raised doubts as to whether TEPCO is seriously trying to change, and an extended blackout at the plant last week was a reminder that the crisis is not over.

7. Did they really ever have any credibility? They certainly haven't earned much the last two years.

TEPCO is functionally bankrupt at this point. It is simply impossible for them to consider new nuclear plant construction (in Japan or in the U.S.) at this point.

When anyone now take responsibility for any wrong they've done.
It's a contrast to what goes on in this country, for sure.
A bit refreshing actually...
