Robertson: God gives less miracles to too-educated Americans who learn science
By David Edwards
Monday, April 1, 2013 14:19 EDT
Televangelist Pat Robertson on Monday explained to his viewers that sophisticated Americans received less miracles because they had learned things that says God isnt real like evolution.
On Mondays episode of CBNs The 700 Club, Robertson responded to a viewer who wanted to know why amazing miracles (people raised from the dead, blind eyes open, lame people walking) happen with great frequency in places like Africa, and not here in the USA?
People overseas didnt go to Ivy League schools, the TV preacher laughed. Were so sophisticated, we think weve got everything figured out. We know about evolution, we know about Darwin, we know about all these things that says God isnt real.
We have been inundated with skepticism and secularism, he conintued. And overseas, theyre simple, humble. You tell em God loves em and they say, Okay, he loves me. You say God will do miracles and they say, Okay, we believe him.

(116 posts)It's funny. The scientist who finally found the Higgs-Boson wanted to call it the goddamned particle.
In his popular book The God Particle: If the Universe is the Answer, What is the Question?, first published in 1993, American physicist Leon Lederman (writing with Dick Teresi) explained why hed chosen this title:
"This boson is so central to the state of physics today, so crucial to our final understanding of the structure of matter, yet so elusive, that I have given it a nickname: the God Particle. Why God Particle? Two reasons. One, the publisher wouldnt let us call it the Goddamn Particle, though that might be a more appropriate title, given its villainous nature and the expense it is causing. And two, there is a connection, of sorts, to another book, a much older one

(33,345 posts)It says that the Bible isn't literally true, and that the Monotheistic conception of God does not jibe with science. All of which threatens the legitimacy of huckster evangelical christianity.
We don't "receive" miracles because science allows us to understand that things which we previously thought were miracles ARE NOT MIRACLES.

(1,309 posts)This is exactly the type of hate practiced by Fox news to stir up the ignorants against the educated. Whether it is to get them to the pols to save the rich guy's money or -heck it is always about saving the rich guys money. This behavior has led to massacres in Africa, the middle east and the best known is in Cambodia.
Do not blow this off . It can be very damaging and very deadly. Confront it head on and talk to your neighbors and others in your communities . We are all human beings after all and we must stop these division tactics.

Some guy who looks like grand dad comes along giving the answer to all their fears like death, pain, purpose... now they don't need to work and learn... just believe... just practice believing... repeat and don't think...

(3,596 posts)I am a Christian and, at least in my faith tradition, we encourage education and self-development.
We believe that while there may be some things that evade human development and understanding, e.g. "why does the universe exist" even if we eventually solve the "what got the big bang going in the first place", man is an intelligent being.
We have no problem reconciling the theory of evolution with the concept of creation. We recognize that it would be a truly dull and uninspiring universe if living creatures did not evolve over time, constantly improving and adapting.
That is not at odds with our belief that life after this one is not earned but rather a gift received as a result of faith and acceptance. We also believe that God has and does perform miracles.
But we also believe that some of those miracles are accomplished through the science and learning of man as man has strived to learn and understand and solve problems.
So Robertson's "blind faith" while attacking educated persons who strive to learn and understand the world around them is not familiar to me. But it is certainly an approach to Christianity (and certainly Islam) that is pushed by many Christian so-called leaders and followed by millions of individuals.

(7,865 posts)Did "Diamond" Pat Robertson quote from the gospel of St Gump or something for this?
But yeah, obviously you should make people more suspicious of intelligence and hold ignorance up as a virtue.

(116 posts)Miracles are very simply coincidences. There are no miracles. There's no proof of miracles. The entire Bible, in my opinion, was written by just ordinary times of the period. I guess my problem is my post-graduate degree. This site represents what I believe. http://tinyurl.com/j9pj7 There is a specific section on miracles.

(12,816 posts)... that sophisticated, educated people are more likely to question whether an actual miracle is not really something scientifically explainable. But he must also acknowledge the corollary: that simple, uneducated folk are more likely to believe that something actually scientifically explainable is really a miracle.

(49,002 posts)At the same time as they believe that intelligent people get fewer miracles from God, they simultaneously believe they are blessed by God. If they believe Robertson's premise, then logically they should believe that God thinks they are stupid. However, it doesn't matter: Robertson's suckers are stupid.
