Italy Appoints Black Cabinet Minister, Erupts With Racism

Source: AP/TPM

NICOLE WINFIELD MAY 1, 2013, 12:08 PM

ROME (AP) — It was hailed as a giant step forward for racial integration in a country that has long been ill at ease with its growing immigrant classes. But Cecile Kyenge’s appointment as Italy’s first black Cabinet minister has instead exposed the nation’s ugly race problem, a blight that flares regularly on the soccer pitch with racist taunts and in the diatribes of xenophobic politicians — but has now raised its head at the center of political life.

One politician from a party that not long ago ruled in a coalition derided what he called Italy’s new “bonga bonga government.” On Wednesday, amid increasing revulsion over the reaction, the government authorized an investigation into neo-fascist websites whose members called Kyenge “Congolese monkey” and other epithets.

Kyenge, 48, was born in Congo and moved to Italy three decades ago to study medicine. An eye surgeon, she lives in Modena with her Italian husband and two children. She was active in local center-left politics before winning a seat in the lower Chamber of Deputies in February elections.

Premier Enrico Letta tapped Kyenge to be minister of integration in his hybrid center-left and center-right government that won its second vote of confidence Tuesday. In his introductory speech to Parliament, Letta touted Kyenge’s appointment as a “new concept about the confines of barriers giving way to hope, of unsurpassable limits giving way to a bridge between diverse communities.”

May 2013

"His (Premier Enrico Letta) praise and that of others has been almost drowned out by the racist slurs directed at Kyenge by politicians of the anti-immigrant Northern League party, an on-again, off-again ally of long-serving ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi, and members of neo-fascist Internet groups.

Unlike France, Germany or Britain, where second and third generations of immigrants have settled albeit uneasily, Italy is a relative newcomer to the phenomenon. France has several high-ranking government ministers with immigrant roots, and few French had a problem with the appointments

“There was no racism 40 years ago because there were no non-white Italians,” said James Walston, a political science professor at American University of Rome. “You need the other in order to hate the other.”

“It will take a long time — probably there will never be a completely racism-free society — but it will take a long time for Italy to reach the sort of acceptance, multi-cultural acceptance that the rest of Europe has and North America has,” he said in an interview."

Many might find that the politician is a cousin.

This shit is not surprising to me. People over here have this mistaken idea that "Europeans" are not racists and are "much more tolerant" than Americans. They aren't. Their societies are more homogeneous, so they don't have to "deal" with issues of diversity. At least, they never did before.

But geez, give 'em a bit of variety, and they freak the fuck out. I've seen this happen in France and in Ireland, too. Plenty of racism to go around....

her family on many family vacations and never heard a peep out of them about anyone's race. This is very very sad to hear. I never new they were so racist. Shame on them. My mother came to this country and she couldn't believe the way people of color were treated. She had a best friend that lived next door to us that was black. My mom and her did many things together. We had the same amount of kids and our fathers were in the Air Force. When my mom went into the hospital to have her baby she took care of us and when she went into the hospital mom take care of her family. Color never was just a color. All of us kids didn't realize there was a problem. My mom wanted to take her at the time to a lunch counter at a five and time store. She said no and my mom keep telling her come on she would pay. Well it was there and then when she told my mother she wasn't allowed to go in the establishment because she was black. My mother was terrible upset and wanted to go in and fight for her right. But she begged mom not to do it. Mom and her left and mom told her she couldn't understand because here she was coming from another country and could go to any place yet she was born here and couldn't. Honestly I never saw anything like that in Italy. But I know things change. How very sad.

But then again back then as a child I don't remember seeing many people of color. In Germany they don't like the Turks. On my father's side some of them seem to be hateful but we never were around them very much as my dad was stationed around the united states. Of course we lived on military bases and we just didn't act like that. We had neighbors from all walk of life. I just can't hate someone for the color of their skin.

I have a friend whose family came from a Rome when she was a little girl and her eyebrows literally shot up when I told her where my then boyfriend was from.

If anything - the 'look down our nose at the poor Southerners' snottyness has actually gotten better the past 15/20 years according to my husband. Especially the past few years where they all have to pull together.

All I know is in Acri - my house on the hill? My husband's 'town' of 40K - I'm treated with kindness, respect, and curiousity.

How so? Grew up there, born there, still a citizen of there.... Always saw people from all over the world, of all colors, shapes and sizes. Are there neo-fascists and racists out there? Of course. Are they a majority of Italians? Absolutely not. FWIW, there have been people of African descent or from Africa who have served and/or serve in various posts in Italy for several decades. I remember in fact one of my city's council women was of African descent.

I wouldn't confuse Italian-Americans with Italian-Italians. There is a slight difference in attitudes that I noticed when I lived in NYC for 6 years. The people of Italian descent did show some rather stark racist attitudes.

I know we've discussed Italy before.

It is in my opinion - the Southerners vs. the Northerners. In reading this thread - I think folks aren't familiar with the racism of the 'uppity Northerners' as my husband refers to them - towards everyone Naples and South.

Just the few times visiting family in the past two years? It's really not as bad as all of this still. We were in Rome as a mixed race couple just in August and we didn't get any of the snotty shit we get in NYC or Philly. Forget about our trip to Myrtle Beach a few years ago!

No worries - it's still not the norm to be mean to blacks in Italy as it is here in the US.

I'd also imagine the scope and breadth of American authored hate sites far exceeds many other counties in this respect.

And as we have our own politicians guilty of numerous "macaca moments" or TN commissioners put an image on his Facebook page, which shows a man aiming a shotgun under the phrase “How to wink at a Muslim.”, that we are indeed ahead of many other countries... but not in a good way.

I certainly don't think American Exceptionalism (again, in this respect) is any better or any worse than that of Italy.

Too much water under the bridge for me to try to understand amerikkkan slavery and the white fear and racial hate it engendered. Too complicated and the love of money and power over others is involved. Very messy. To hell with all people who base their hate on color, ethnicity, religion or gender. The MODERN world has amerikkkan right wing racial hate as a perfect model to follow. Please don't insult me by trying to minimize amerikkkas culpability in generating racial hate since the Native-American Holocaust and slavery.
