Gingrich: ‘It Would Be A Major Mistake’ To Send Troops To Syria

Source: TPM

Newt Gingrich on Wednesday said flatly that it would be a "major mistake" for the United States to send troops to Syria, a departure from the more hawkish rhetoric he employed a year ago as a Republican presidential candidate.

"No one in the region wants us invading yet another country," Gingrich said in an email sent out by his group, Gingrich Productions. "None of our allies want our strength diverted from Iran. There is no practical mission American forces could accomplish without a very large commitment."

At a Republican presidential debate last year in Arizona, the former House speaker mocked President Barack Obama for not doing more in Syria. "This is an administration which, as long as you're America's enemy, you're safe," Gingrich said. "You know, the only people you've got to worry about is if you're an American ally."

In his email Wednesday, Gingrich expressed concern over Syria's chemical weapons "getting into the hands of terrorists." and said that the U.S. could "provide intelligence, technical support, and in a worst case air power to destroy the sophisticated and massive Syrian anti-aircraft defenses." But ultimately, he said, the onus should fall on Syria's neighbors to bring the bloody, two-year-long civil war.

The people of Syria are going to have to work this out without US intervention and I disagree with you that the US will go to war with Iran because of it.

at his comments. Which of those Arab countries he mentioned are allies to Israel? The countries or organizations he did not mention besides the Iranians are Iraq, Lebanon and the Palestinians. He didn't mention Yemen either. I do not think, the Shites in Lebanon or Iraq are enemies of Syria. I also know the North Koreans have relations with Iran and helped to train Hizbullah fighters other than Syria and Iran. If you look at another perspective, it is a conflict between Shiites, Sunnis and Salafists with Israel on the outside of both Islamic factions. Both Islamic sides are hoping to get the upper hand in their conflict with outside intervention. Which ever side wins out, there is no favorable outcome for Israel or the West. If the extremists win out in Syria, you will have a stricter Islamic state. If you intervene on the side of minorities, you will have continous conflicts among the extremists. You could also have a counter insurgency from loyalists within the Assad regime. And Iran seems to have the most unified force in that region among Islamic states and also the most powerful armed forces. I don't know why people dismiss the reports that Iranian military officials have been secretly sharing nuclear technology with North Korea. You have to also consider what the Chinese and Russians are up too and also Pakistan's intelligence forces. The U.S. could get sucked into a bigger War that they don't expect. There is a lot of past military strategy that should be looked at from past Wars and how nations, that seem invincible at the time are defeated. One of those was how the nazi war machine got sucked into Russia. The U.S. is making Allies with strange bed fellows, that I would not trust.
