King says UAW prepping for nationwide protests
BY BRYCE G. HOFFMAN THE DETROIT NEWS
Flint United Auto Workers President Bob King used the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Flint Sit-Down Strike to call for "direct action" including nonviolent civil disobedience to take back America from the "right-wing Republicans" and "one-percenters" who he says have hijacked this democracy.
King said the UAW would begin training its members and other activists this spring to take part in peaceful, but potentially illegal, protests across America to stop what he called the rollback of workers' rights and civil rights.
"It will take direct action. It will take us being willing to face arrest. It will take us being willing to be part of marches and demonstrations," King told a crowd of some 500 union members gathered to mark the anniversary of the end of the 1937 strike against General Motors Co. that led to the UAW's first national contract. "They are attacking democracy in America. They are attacking the labor movement."
King said the UAW and other groups must prepare to use the tactics of the civil rights movement and the protests in Tunisia, Egypt and other parts of the Arab world to fight for things such as universal health care and "economic and social justice."

(4,959 posts)Surprised to see this from the top levels of the UAW. I would expect it from the rank and file but not from King.

(5,420 posts)the union had already joined with occupy for protest but this calling for actual nonviolent civil disobedience with possiblity of arrests kind of cements it in nicely.
I love it.

(17,301 posts)It's because of the protests. He compromises and capitualates with anyone that's dissatisfied. Up to recently that only included the RepubliCONS. Now he must compromise and capitulate with Real American People.

(6,994 posts)once elected he rode the corporate bandwagon...A majority in both houses and he catered to the demands of the Republican/corporations. The healthcare bill was nothing more than bragging rights ..but nothing like he campaigned for..he allowed the insurance companies to write the legislation....on the economy...he campaigned on a new,new deal to make sure we kept the jobs going....but all that changed..So we shall see after the election if he still acts like a Democrat or jumps on the corporate bandwagon...again.

It IS good to see labor taking a truly active stance on this. Hell - all they gotta do for motivation is watch a bit of what Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, Aridzona and others are being FORCE-fed.
That said - I think the Dems stand to do better more because of how flagrantly whack-O the Repugs are than how reasonable the Dems are talking. Of course, a win by default is still a win.

(6,994 posts)this idiotic right to work law the damn republicans pushed through..As I read more about this ALEC and the Koch brothers goal of wanting to destroy unions I am convinced they suckered Gov. Daniels into their fold and now are hungry for more of their radical bull shit if we get a another Repuke Governor..Rumor has it that Pence is going to run so we need a strong Democrat that can win and maybe just maybe overturn this union busting law...Sorry to get off topic but we need real Democrats that will work for the values of the working class and that means defeating the corporate money and Im just not sure we can....I was surprised to learn that 10 major banks own 77% of this country's wealth..10 banks

(13 posts)The UAW has a history of being duplicitous always hiding their real agenda which is , and has always been, UAW union power and money at the top.

(5,787 posts)This will go no where if American's don't get off their dead asses and take to the streets everywhere. The unemployed and underemployed are too complacent and will do little to make their voices heard I'm afraid.
