MONTPELLIER, France (AP) — France's first gay couple to marry have said "oui" in a politically charged ceremony in the southern city of Montpellier. The two men sealed the deal with a lengthy smooch.

Hundreds of invited guests, including a government minister, gathered for the ceremony, which was broadcast live to the country. Hundreds more flocked to the square outside the building.

Montpellier Mayor Helene Mandroux, who officiated, called the law that legalized gay marriage "a stage in the modernization of our country."

However, I'll admit I'm envious of the sweeping change. We here in Backwardsland have to wage battle state-by-state. Ridiculous.

The media really wants to make it sound like there is a 50/50 split or that the courts are bucking the will of the majority but the fact is that the anti-gay marriage sentiment is a tiny but loud minority.

Eventually the voice echoes into nothingness though. It just takes time.

It also took out the Arc d'Triomphe. The Louvre pyramid is in shards. The baguettes are soggy. The wine tastes like Bud. Wost of all, the fromage has turned into Velveeta. Clearly, Dieu is unhappy.

She has long been the figurehead of France’s passionate anti-gay marriage movement, but as Vincent Autin and Bruno Boileau tied the knot in the country’s first gay wedding on Wednesday, Frigide Barjot sent a message of congratulations to the happy couple.

Speaking ahead of the ceremony, Barjot, who was best known as a comedian before her delve into political activism, said that she was sending her “best wishes of commitment, loyalty and happiness” to Vincent and Bruno.

In recent months, those against the legalisation of gay marriage, passed into law earlier in May, have held numerous protests in Paris and elsewhere, some of which have turned violent.

But with gay marriage in France now a fact, Barjot is calling for the movement to enter a “new phase” under the moniker “The Future for All”.
