(Nevada) Governor vetoes gun bill, says it would erode rights
Source: Las Vegas Sun
Gov. Brian Sandoval has vetoed a bill requiring background checks for gun sales between private parties, saying it imposes unreasonable burdens and harsh penalties upon law-abiding Nevadans, while doing little to prevent criminals from unlawfully obtaining firearms.
In his veto message, the governor said background checks would constitute an erosion of Nevadans Second Amendment rights under the United States Constitution and may subject otherwise law-abiding citizens to criminal prosecution.
The bill, SB-221, was pushed by its sponsor, Sen. Justin Jones, D-Las Vegas, who has said he was not surprised by the governors promise to veto the bill. He said that if Congress does not require universal background checks, he will push his legislation again in the 2015 Legislature.
Although it was no secret that Sandoval was going to veto Jones' bill, the veto message sparked the ire of progressive groups that had lobbied for its passage.

(3,731 posts)I live here and this doesn't make sense, they're saying that 86% of Nevadans favored this bill, and yet......
Seems our Sheriffs and Chiefs didn't agree with this bill either.

I said from the very moment that Bloomberg and MAIG interfering in NV. politics would create a lot of resentment.
Nevada residents have a fiercely independent streak and we don't appreciate someone like Bloomberg, who is nothing more than a member of the 1%'ers, telling us how we should vote.
This bill, which I supported, might have had a chance if Bloomberg and MAIG hadn't come in with their money.

(39,665 posts)The governor's veto has nothing to do with Nevada residents' "fiercely independent streak".
Nevada residents supported the bill. Nevada's legislative bodies passed the bill. The Republican governor vetoed it.
Your governor might be considered "fiercely independent," except he merely cast his vote the same as the other Republicans in your state did.
You are promoting a transparent fiction.

(3,731 posts)then how do you explain these numbers?

BTW, you know where most of this poll being cited was conducted?
Clark County, which encompasses Las Vegas.
Hey Robb, I live here, do you? I know how much resentment was created by Bloomberg and MAIG interfering in NV politics.
Deny it all you want, but I'm here on the ground, I know first hand.
Robb
(39,665 posts)I also called. Did you? The message did not ask whether you were a resident of Nevada, much less Clark County. It asked you to press one to indicate your support of the bill, 2 to indicate your opposition. Then it hung up.
You want to hang your hat on that system, "on the ground"?

(3,731 posts)turn the tide? You keep saying that the gun control movement is getting stronger, so what happened here?
Thanks to Bloomberg and MAIG, we won't have another chance at statewide UBC until 2015.
Like I said, I live here, I know the resentment that was generated by Bloomie and Co. interfering in our politics.
But if your theory makes you feel better, then be my guest and stick with it.
One other thing, if SB 221 was so popular, why did it pass the NV. Senate by 1 vote and the NV. Assembly by 4 votes?
An 86% approval rate should've had more support in our legislature.

(37,748 posts)I imagine the samples you used re: phone calls don't square with the sample of the voters because the national RW political action committee know as the NRA is pretty good at mustering its members via the mechanism of paranoia and fear to better get them to overturn the popular vote.
"Bloomberg, who is nothing more than a member of the 1%'ers, telling us how we should vote..." No problem with the NRA telling people how to vote though...

(3,731 posts)unfortunately, the NRA is more welcome than Bloomberg and Co. in the rural areas of Nevada, that's just a sad fact here.

I don't really give a damn what you believe, I worked hard to get this bill passed, I called the Gov's. office several times urging him to sign it, now, I have to start all over again in 2015, and hopefully, Bloomberg, MAIG and the NRA will stay away this time, and, hopefully, we'll have a new Gov. that is more amendable to signing a UBC into law.
Getting nailed in other threads? Funniest thing I've heard today, and the day has just started.
If I were you, I wouldn't hang my hat on someone like him who constantly distorts the truth.
Have a good day, I plan to, and, you just made my day even better.
