Al Gore says Obama must veto 'atrocity' of Keystone XL tar sands pipeline

Source: The Guardian

Al Gore has called on Barack Obama to veto the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, describing it as "an atrocity".

The former vice-president said in an interview on Friday that he hoped Obama would follow the example of British Columbia, which last week rejected a similar pipeline project, and shut down the Keystone XL.

"I certainly hope that he will veto that now that the Canadians have publicly concluded that it is not safe to take a pipeline across British Columbia to ports on the Pacific," he told the Guardian. "I really can't imagine that our country would say: 'Oh well. Take it right over parts of the Ogallala aquifer', our largest and most important source of ground water in the US. It's really a losing proposition."

millions of us have been pleading with him for 4 years to do some things on behalf of the people instead of the corporations. It's a waste of breath.

Prediction: He'll sign off on it "in return for future considerations on (the sequester, HC, deficit, SNAP, Pentagon budget)..."

1/3 of DU will enthusiastically cheer the chessmaster/only adult in the room.

True, sad to say. Obama appears pretty cozy with the extraction industry. He'll likely sign it.

He said yesterday in interview on Bloomberg News that we will have "plentiful Natural Gas and Oil in the future and combined with solar and wind that will mean that companies will come here to do manufacturing and given that our wages are now on parity with the rest of the world it will be a boost to our economic future."

So that's a yes. Assume Hillary agrees but I've not seen her make any statements about environmental issues.

The secret reasoning behind that fucking pipeline is PRICE-FIXING.

Sky-rocketing demand caused by exploding exportation is an incredible price-fixing-for-profit tool.

Keystone Exportation Price-Fixing Pipeline is a gigantic hose that flows oil to Texas seaports for easy, ultra-fast exportation/price-fixing.

Those of us who oppose this environmental nightmare awaiting to happen, need a superpac that will run commercials and teach the American people that America needs to halt the practice of oil exportation and how it impoverishes us by skyrocketing demand and increasing carbon output.

Kudo's to Gore for urging Obama to veto this.

Gore does his best work outside the system. I had hopes that he'd run in 2008, but when he was starting to lay the platform for it, you saw him doubletalking and trying to please everyone again.

The problem is that as things are, the President is not and CANNOT be a leader. His or her job is to sell unpopular corporate positions to us while pretending to be on our side.

THAT has to change before we can expect to get anyone worth voting for.
