Gallup POLL - Americans' Confidence in Newspapers Continues to Erode
Source: Gallup POLL
Fewer than one in four Americans confident in newspapers, TV news
The percentage of Americans saying they have "a great deal" or "quite a lot" of confidence in newspapers has been generally trending downward since 1979, when it reached a high of 51%.
Newspapers rank near the bottom on a list of 16 societal institutions Gallup measured in a June 1-4 survey. Television news is tied with newspapers on the list, with 23% of Americans also expressing confidence in it. That is up slightly from the all-time low of 21% found last year. The only institutions television news and newspapers beat out this year are big business, organized labor, Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), and Congress.
Conservatives' confidence in newspapers, at 15%, is down from 21% in 2012 and 2011. Moderates' confidence has been trending downward for the past two years, and is now at 25%. Liberals remain the most confident in newspapers -- although not by much -- with 31% putting a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in them this year

This story was posted on Alex Jones 8 hours ago (just can't link to that guy as top bill) - about the recent POLL that American's distrust Congress nearly 90% - (which most of U.S. were already well aware of) - this new POLL serves as a reiteration of the well known fact that;
Main Stream Media is nothing more than veiled agenda propaganda
(especially when a tool like Mitt Romney's owns Bain Capital; which owns Clear Channel Communications) 800 stations/ 100 million plus listeners under such shows as Rush Lame'baugh - Incongruous Hannity & can't Combs - and Glenn (bucks) Beck (who every once in a while actually appears to be sincere).
Here's a link to Alex Jones take (for what its worth) that references Anthony Gucciardi ( here )

I know this fall under most of your "DUH" categories - as no big revelation. But here's the deal that we need discuss. 1st of all, the "real" media outlets of today are You & I. We are the one's who Obama reached out through his social media network to get elected and re-elected. Romney could NOT buy such (even after we pointed out that Obama had 15 million followers to Romney's few 100,000) [NOTE: Mitt's campaign went out the very next days and "acquired" 1 million total (purported) followers.
However, the real thing is - until we push papers & TV News to their ultimate (well deserved less than hallowed antiquity) END; we will continue to be torn between hearing verbal, repetitive, reinforcing "main stream" B.S. and our "real" News.
We ARE the People - and we ARE the main stream media of today - (but sadly still need lame stream to say so).

We're not there, yet, but hopefully soon we will ALL reject incorporated, bought-and-paid-for news media of every ilk.

(31,849 posts)What would happen to a country where confidence in all of its political institutions ... Congress, the Judiciary and the Executive Office are completely eroded AND the people lose complete faith in the media, except for that part that feeds their own bias?
I think we're about to find out; but I think we already have a template from which to draw conclusions ...

(7,018 posts)cannot help but be staggered by the amount of propaganda, lies and sheer
crap that's been spewed the last decades. Journalism, a once-proud
occupation of the past, is dying -- if not already dead.
Whatever the Right-Wingers touch soon turns into horse-manure! Can't
they, themselves, see that? All they need to do is to open their eyes. But
they won't.

(5,402 posts)I run a newspaper, and the distrust people have in the whole industry is simply awful. We are just a small number of journalists working our tails off to cover the local scene for barely minimum wage, trying to put out the rough draft of our local history as quickly and cleanly as possible.
Most of the time we get it right, and on occasion we have made mistakes. We always own up to them.
The distrust reaches all the way down to the small weeklies, and it hurts.
If we lose the newspaper industry, whether it is online or in print, we will lose any last chance for our democracy.

(7,805 posts)The onslaught of the net changed all of that. My main biz was find market niches for other's mistakes. Now they all (errant in their logic) believe they can do that with eBay. The advance of the net and RLA (Reverse Logistics Association) - has made my life's work antiquated.
You, on the other hand, can adapt to the online realm.
It is an imperative that you do - utilizing the customer base you have - to give you a head start in the realm.

Automobiles came and buggy whip manufactures also became antiquated.
The fact that you are here - openly engaged in banter - demonstrates a chance for hope.
IF my remarks have not infuriated you - and you wish to discuss solutions (which is what I do now)
Freely, I offer my assistance to you (in a think tank sort of way) - to seek resolution of your dilemma.
Often, I'm engaged in discussions with main stream persons on this issue - and they are finding solutions.

(71 posts)Our local used to be newspaper has been bought by the Right Wing. It is anti govt., anti tax and anti schools and anti youth, unless they are young Republicans. Now it is just tabloid and fish wrap. They have a bad habit of going after liberal and left politicians. They dig until they find dirt and then they sling it every day until the person is totally ruined. Who wants to run for office in that climate?
They fired almost all the good reporters and hired from the tabloids calling it "Investigative Journalism".
They also publish tabloid type stories of marital infidelity in leading families that no one needs to know about. It is really a disaster here in Portland. Civil groups are really afraid to have the Oregonian cover their events because a little thing can be blown up into a big mess.
"Scandal without dignity or taste" is their motto. Any wonder we loose faith in "the press". Anyone out there having the same problem?

(Senator's are prevented by Law - from getting involved in specific cases on individual basis)
specifically, as per Mitt Romney's Colm F Connolly attorney becoming U.S. Attorney.
Senator Joe Biden flatly refused to sign the requisite "Slip" to process Colm Connolly's nomination to the Federal Judge Bench.
Then, the Wilmington News Journal (with Rep Mike Castle in unison) -
Barked, scolded, wrote, spoke and did relentless stories assailing Senator Joe Biden
Kind of a good thing they did though; as it was during Senator Biden's run for POTUS.
May have been one of the badge's of honor that caused Barack Obama to take notice of him.
