CBO: Senate immigration bill would cut deficits by $200 billion over decade
Source: Washington Post
The immigration bill under consideration in the Senate would reduce federal deficits by nearly $200 billion over the next decade, and continue generating savings in the years beyond, even after millions of new citizens became eligible for health-care and welfare benefits, congressional budget analysts said Tuesday.
The long-awaited report by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office marked a major victory for the bipartisan Gang of Eight senators who have spent months negotiating the details of the measure. Although some conservatives say the bill would cost the nation billions of dollars, CBO analysts concluded the opposite, undercutting a potentially powerful argument against the legislation.
This report is a huge momentum boost for immigration reform, said Sen. Charles E. Schumer (N.Y.), the lead Democratic negotiator. This debunks the idea that immigration reform is anything other than a boon to our economy and robs the bills opponents of one of their last remaining arguments.
The White House welcomed the report, saying in a statement, Today, we have more proof that bipartisan commonsense immigration reform will be good for economic growth and deficit reduction: this time, in the form of a nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimate.

(25,183 posts)And I suspect that nearly the entire Rethuglican Congressional delegation is in downright disbelief. I don't see any immigration bill being passed by both houses of Congress, all it will be is a blame game about whose fault it was that nothing got passed.

(7,412 posts)Just curious, are they assuming this immigration bill will also turn the job market and economy around with a newfound abundance of cheap non-union labor?

(32,027 posts)If they're legal bosses will no longer have the deportation threats to give and need to pay the immigrant as much as a citizen, right?

(7,412 posts)Why would a current employer of cheap illegal labor now want to pay more for legal workers? They will need more illegal laborers imported to fill the void.

(9,462 posts)members who think they're still the party of hate and bigotry. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in some of those closed door meetings. Hey, we can do it for the money, but PRETEND like we're doing it for morality. It's a win-win.
Another number crunching fail from the gop. Their immigration report said it would cost how much if we allowed the immigration bill to pass? 60 billion? Well, that's closer than they were on the election polls for Romney. They're getting better. Sarcasm...

(7,403 posts)After all, CBO has shown the Affordable Care Act reduces the budget and that hasn't stopped the House from voting 37 times to completely repeal the act. And the last vote to repeal came after CBO estimates were adjusted to show that the savings would be even greater than the original estimate.
