(Texas) Senate OKs abortion measure in late vote

Last edited Wed Jun 19, 2013, 03:19 AM - Edit history (1)

Source: Austin American-Statesman

The Texas Senate approved a sweeping abortion measure late Tuesday night despite spirited opposition from Democrats who warned that the proposal would make it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for most Texas women to receive the procedure.

Republicans insisted the bill will improve women’s health care by requiring abortion facilities to be vastly improved, doctors to more closely monitor drug-induced abortions and physicians to obtain admitting privileges in a nearby hospital should complications arise.

Democrats and abortion rights advocates, however, said concerns for women’s health are a ruse hiding the bill’s true intent: to shut down most Texas clinics and otherwise make abortions more difficult or expensive to obtain.

“This isn’t about making women safe, is it? It’s about political primaries and making sure you are feeding the red meat to the people who are voting in those primaries,” said state Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth.

You're from the Lone Star State, so I guess you must've been disappointed tonight.

Of course in politics surprising things happen, and when I read the title I nearly screamed: "HARRY REID ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND?"

6. I'm following the rules which state that the EXACT TITLE of the article must be used.

My apologies for causing any alarm--it's LBN from the local newspaper at the Texas Capitol so they didn't consider including "Texas" in the title or indicating Austin, Texas at the beginning.

I'm also cringing about this action and I'm a male. The Republicans in Texas hate women unless they are subservient to their men. Women of child-bearing age should investigate how to leave here if this nonsense continues and if a law is signed they need to fight it in court.

It's this kind of stupidity which has made me an active member on DU.

Getting the news out is more important. I posted it first in the Texas group, then decided it is a significant story worthy of being in LBN. It shouldn't be a major concern if looking at the home page, but I understand that it might arouse some anger if someone is only looking at the Latest Threads.

I have a feeling that this will be a top story on Maddow and most of the other MSNBC shows tomorrow.

5. Hopefully it'll be overturned in Federal Court, as several of these measures have been.

In which case the State of Texas will have spent millions on legal fees with little to no net result.

since 2010 and closer we get to the 2014 anti-abortion laws and other women rights concerning her body is quickly passing majority GOPer states and of course the fucked up house of no representatives. Its like they know they MAY BE effed in 2014. I'm pretty sure all these bs laws that they are passing won't hold water once sensible representatives of the people take control of the states and the congress.

400 women have died from legal abortions since 1973. Source; LifeNews.com That averages out to 10 per year.

650 women die each year as a result of pregnancy, or delivery complications. The United States ranks a dismal 50th in maternal mortality--dead last in the developed world. That averages out to 26,000 deaths for the same time period. Source CDC; Center for disease control.

The data shows that having a legal abortion is extremely safe !!! It is one of the safest medical procedures that exist.

These attacks on abortion rights have zero to do with protecting women.

Maybe Republicans should outlaw pregnancy.

It would be the next logical step, since they continue to say they are protecting women.
