Key Gun-Control Backer Faces Recall in Colorado
Source: Wall Street Journal
A voter effort to oust Colorado's Senate president from office has cleared a key hurdle, sending a cautionary message to state lawmakers who support gun control.
Colorado authorities on Tuesday certified that the campaign to oust Sen. John Morse, a Democrat who had successfully pushed for a package of gun-control laws earlier this year, had gathered enough voter signatures to put the recall attempt on the ballot later this year.
The secretary of state's office verified that more than 10,000 registered voters in Mr. Morse's Colorado Springs-area district signed a petition to recall Mr. Morse. About 7,200 were needed to trigger a recall vote, which would be the first of an elected state official in Colorado history.
The recall vote is widely seen as a referendum on Mr. Morse's support for bills that were signed into law in March, including those requiring all potential gun purchasers to submit to background checks and banning the sale of magazines containing more than 15 rounds.

(3,731 posts)but if it were a recall against a pro gun politician, it would be cheered far and wide here.

(1,085 posts)Its vry sad to think that even the slightest effort to control guns is met with howls of opposition by the far right who think their "constitutional rights" are being taken away and comparisons made to Nazi Germany?
But how are they any different from those that insist that in the middle of a war with terrorists we cannot spy on anyone without their Constitutional rights being taken way even after the man they voted for insists that is no abuses are occurring and comparisons made to North Korea?

(23,730 posts)could really help send a message. That the Gun Control groups are no longer going to roll over and surrender to the NRA and gun manufacturers. That's who is financing this recall effort.

(11,064 posts)although a member of the super-rich, might not have given this his full attention as he has been busy in his efforts to undermine the 4th, 5th, and 1st Amendments.
A Federal court is about to undermine his stop-and-frist-for-no-good-reasons efforts. Also lawsuits are still pending for his use of his army of police to deliver unnecessary and excessive violence to peaceful Occupy Wall Street protestors who said things that he and other members of the super-rich did not want to hear.
If you can afford to send money to Sen. John Morse, you should do that.

Mr. David
(535 posts)Of course, the Republican Secretary of State with ethics issues, who's also got his eyes on Frackenlooper's seat, approved it.
It'll fail, miserably.
What's more, there will be a new Democratic Secretary of State this fall.

Mr. David
(535 posts)Sorry was not able to answer your question since I do have to make a living...
Morse is a good man, and if the voters agree, the recall will be defeated, and the NRA and their cronies exposed.
It's time to remove more Colorado teabaggers from politics and send them off to a nearby red state. I have been suggesting these morons to move to Wyoming if they want to grab guns..

(32,066 posts)So all these signatures are fake? Why didn't the Senator's representatives point that out? They have access to the petitions.

(1,254 posts)The signatures may be real, but it seems the petition itself may be invalid as outlined in the Colorado article linked above. If the validity of the petition is challenged (in court) and deemed invalid then technically the signatures as part and parcel become invalid. A new petition for recall would have to be submitted and new signatures collected.
