NC Senate gives preliminary approval to bill restricting abortions

Source: Raleigh News and Observer

The state Senate voted Tuesday night on a measure that would add restrictions on abortions, forcing clinics to meet expensive license requirements and making it difficult for doctors to perform the procedures.

Under the bill, abortion clinics would have to meet standards for licensure similar to those of ambulatory surgical centers. According to legislative staff, only one clinic in the state currently meets that standard. The bill would also require doctors to be present when women take a drug that induces abortions.

. . .
The bill popped up as a surprise in a Senate committee meeting Tuesday evening. A few hours later, Senate Republicans voted to waive their rules to allow a floor vote.

The proposed abortion legislation was attached to a bill disallowing the use of Islamic law in family matters such as divorce, child custody and alimony. Democrats were outraged that the abortion provisions came up without public notice, in the late afternoon, and close to a holiday weekend.

didn't change the world in two years.

Elections matter and Democrats chose a lousy time to refuse to go to the polls. Now we paying for it in certain states.

Gerrymandering is killing us. Charges that Obama didn't "change the world in two years" is a Crap Blog nonsense that I have little patience for. Poor, poor Obama.

NC 2012 numbers:

Straight Party Vote
Dem 55.54%
Rep 43.48%
Lib .98%

Governor
Dalton (D) 43.2%
McCrory (R) 54.6%

(With the 5th worst unemployment in the nation, many are DESPERATE for jobs. Particularly those in counties with double-digit unemployment, many of them with high African-American populations. McCrory was perceived as the moderate, long-term mayor from Charlotte who would be good for the economy.)

NC 2010 numbers:

Straight Party Vote
Dem 51.24%
Rep 47.98%
Libertarian .78%

Fear of Granny being offed by Death Panels, and high unemployment is what drove NC voting in 2010. And since we just learned that the ACA employer mandate is being pushed off until at least 2015, but the individual mandate still stands, 2014 could very well be U-G-L-Y.

McConnell, Haley. . .hell, even Ron Kirk won Obama's old seat.

Come on. . .gerrymandering works in districts. We took a killing in 2010 because Democrats stayed home nationwide.

Now, GET YOUR FUCKING FACTS STRAIGHT!!!

and don't follow the numbers; perhaps someone else can present data. I'm letting you know what happened in NC -- Obamacare and insanely high unemployment.

Many of the states you mention are SWING states, get it? They SWING from election to election. As someone who once paid insane property taxes in NJ, I'm imagining Christie won on the promise of lower taxes. Plus, Corzine's fall from grace. You're surprised McConnell won, in fucking Kentucky? Or did you mean Governor Ultrasound (McDonnell) in VA? I'm guessing ultra-blue Northern Virginia turned out the vote (as always), but it wasn't enough to match the Sensible Centrists in the rest of the state, hence McDonnell. A Republican (Haley) won in SC? Shocking!

How about you coughing up REAL numbers for the legions of Democrats who didn't vote, SOLELY because they were "pissed off at Obama," as you and every other Crap Blogger and/or True Believer alleges. Progressive Democrats did well; it's the Malleable Middle who can't make up its mind from election to election who sat out, or voted for Republicans.

I don't think people on this board understand how much the ACA is HATED in certain parts of the country. And Rs now have fodder for 2014 and 2016. And where is Obama on this? Where is his strong voice on the latest development -- the employer mandate being delayed? There's too much uncertainty, and THAT is hurting the economy. Just like the uncertainty over the expiration of the fucking Bush tax cuts, and the insane budget deals. And while I'm at it: Fuck Chained CPI.

We didn't have far to fall but we (they) really made sure it happened.

My FB feed is on fuego with folks who are fired up about this and all the other crazy stuff the State Leg is doing. If anything good comes out of this, North Carolinians have received and are responding to their wake-up call.

I mean really: These are not people trying to govern pragmatically. They're just trying to solidify whatever gains they've made to gird their loins while they can so as to delay the rollback when they're shitcanned when all their gerrymandering bullshit can't overcome their numeric unpolularity. Hence their urgency in nutjobbery.
