Security Forces Raid Al Jazeera Egyptian TV Channel

Source: Reuters

CAIRO, July 3 (Reuters) - Security forces raided the Cairo offices of Al Jazeera's Egyptian television channel on Wednesday and detailed at least five staff, hours after the army toppled Islamist President Mohamed Mursi, a journalist at the station said.

Karim El-Assiuti told Reuters his colleagues at the Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr channel were arrested while working in the studio. The station was prevented from broadcasting from a pro-Mursi rally and its crew there was also detained, he said.

The Egyptian arm of the Qatari-owned media company began broadcasting after the 2011 uprising that topped President Hosni Mubarak and has been accused by critics of being sympathetic to Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood. (Reporting by Maggie Fick; Writing by Paul Taylor)

I hear they've also shut down other media outlets. Ain't military democracy grand?

Not any half-hearted measures. The pro-MB voices are being silenced.

I know one person who must be very pleased with this turn events: Bashar al-Assad. There is indeed a great deal of organic unity between Assad and the Egyptian generals, whether they all realize it or not. The Syrian constitution outlaws parties that are based on religious affiliation: that effectively rules out MB, which is why they are engaged in terrorism there. Perhaps the Egyptian officers would consider placing similar "red lines" in a revised Egyptian constitution.

They were allowed to stand individually as independents.

What you seen today are the cities : not the countryside.

There's no way that MB would lose a free election, except perhaps to the even more extreme Salafists. The secular/liberal/nationalist forces are at most 15% of the electorate, including the Christian bloc vote.
