Islamists protest in Egypt demanding Morsi return
CAIRO (AP) -- Egyptian troops have opened fire on supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi marching on Republican Guard facility. Several are wounded, at least one severely with a shot to the head.
An Associated Press photographer at the scene Friday says the Republic Guard forces opened fire when protesters approached a barbed wire barrier around the facility and hung a picture of Morsi on it.
Several protesters fell wounded, including at least one severely with a bloody wound to the head.

(135,060 posts)The Egyptian army has denied shooting at Morsi's supporters, in the face of widespread reports that it did.
Reuters reports:
Egyptian troops did not open fire on supporters of ousted President Mohamed Mursi on Friday, an army spokesman said, after security sources said three demonstrators were shot dead by security forces in a protest near where Morsi is being held.
The spokesman said soldiers were using only blank rounds and teargas. It was unclear whether security forces other than the army were present.
The BBC Jeremy Bowen was one of those wounded, according to this photo from Sharfi Kouddous.

(135,060 posts)However the BBC's Jeremy Bowen at the scene says he saw soldiers fire on the protesters.
About 2,000 people had marched on the officers's club after passionate Friday Prayers at the nearby Rabaa al-Adawiya Mosque.
As the crowd grew, got angrier and pushed forward, the troops opened fire - first into the air, then at the crowd, our correspondent reports.
He saw one man fall to the ground with blood on his clothes. More people are arriving at the scene and anger there is growing, says our correspondent - who was himself lightly wounded in the head by shotgun pellets.

(1,528 posts)The MB should not antagonize the situation.
Comrade Grumpy
(13,184 posts)Let me get this straight: You want the Muslim Brotherhood, whose people won EVERY election since the ouster of Mubarek, who are the largest political force in Egypt, who just had their democratic government stolen from them, to sit down and shut up?
The opposition certainly didn't "not antagonize the situation," did they?
That's a funny kind of democracy you're preaching.

(1,528 posts)I'm sure they are not happy what happened but rather than continuing the cycle of violence, they should try to win over the hearts and minds of the people.

Comrade Grumpy
(13,184 posts)I don't recall hearing you demand that the opposition stop its thuggery in the days, weeks, and months leading up to the coup.
Or was that good violence?
jessie04
(1,528 posts)We can go forever with who started what and when. The MB should step up, end the cycle of violence and be part of the solution.
Comrade Grumpy

(1,528 posts)I'm not the problem......They want a democracy.
What I think really doesn't matter.
Comrade Grumpy
(13,184 posts)The people in Tahrir square didn't want a democracy; they wanted democracy overthrown, and they got what they wanted.
They have tried to hamstring and sabotage the Morsi government from the beginning, and largely succeeded in bringing Egypt to a screaming halt. Now they have a Mubarek crony and the generals leading their country.
If they wanted democracy, they would have voted Morsi and the MB out in the next elections. Instead, they wanted mob rule, and they got it, thanks to the military.
Comrade Grumpy
(13,184 posts)Yeah, that's nonviolent.

(8,821 posts)That is just the military, "Defending the rights of Egyptian citizens." You know, "Egyptian democracy exhibited again."
Please be aware that despite the army's great love, any threatening actions, such as trying to hang up a Morsi poster in public, will of course be punishable by summary execution.
