Food Workers at Smithsonian Strike Over Wages
Source: ABC
Workers from two Smithsonian Institution museum eateries are staging a one-day strike calling for the federally funded museums to ensure they are paid a "living wage."
Organizers say the workers plan to protest Thursday outside the National Air and Space Museum and march to the Smithsonian Castle.
The workers are employed by McDonald's Corp. and Restaurant Associates, which operate museum restaurants on the National Mall. Organizers say the strike includes restaurant workers from the National Museum of American History and the space museum.

(9,154 posts)visiting a fast-food franchise in a huge shopping mall. At the time, the national franchise was running a sale of some kind, maybe it was a hamburger for a buck or something. Anyway, the mall store refused to sell at the nationally advertized TV sale price, instead charging the full menu cost which was something like 3 or 4 bucks.

(5,170 posts)in a different case: it passed an ordinance requiring Wal-Mart to pay a $12.50 living wage to its employees. Wal-Mart's response? It's threatening not to operate in DC. One of three planned stores is almost finished being built. Assholes.

(23,156 posts)Many years ago, as in forty or more years ago, there was a cafeteria/restaurant in the basement of the American History Museum of the Smithsonian. They served real food there, actually cooked on the premisses. God, it was good. When they switched over to plastic and cardboard food, I stopped feeding myself at the Smithsonian.
Nonetheless, I support those workers in their wage protest, insofar as my words from 1500 miles away mean anything.
