White House pledges veto of GOP farm bill

Source: USA Today

House Republicans are scheduled to vote on their own farm bill Thursday, but the White House has already threatened a veto.

The Democrat-run Senate is also unlikely to pass the House Republican farm bill that would expand a crop insurance program, but does not include food stamps for the poor.

The bill "fails to reauthorize nutrition programs, which benefit millions of Americans -- in rural, suburban and urban areas alike," said a veto message from President Obama's budget office. "The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is a cornerstone of our nation's food assistance safety net, and should not be left behind as the rest of the Farm Bill advances."

We would be much better off if their members simply flipped coins when deciding how to vote.

if you want a bill that benefits a narrow group, it needs to be attached to something with broader appeal.

Saw the All-In clip from Chris Hayes on House Dem's who spoke out on this. They were pissed. A bit scared there for a moment since I didn't know Senate hasn't voted on it yet. Cool. Its DOA.

Something this White House had to look up before mentioning.

This negotiating team has been taken to the cleaners so often by the GOP, I wonder on what they will cave next in order to get a farm bill almost as bad as what the House passed.

Speaking of passing, this farm bill reminds me of passing a stone. At least how my father described it.

They're all farmers, running anywhere from a few hundred to over a thousand acres of corn, soy, alfalfa, cattle and hogs. The prospect of losing tens of thousands of dollars in federal subsidies a year is driving them nuts right now.

Of course, these are the same conservative farmers I remember bitching and yelling about welfare queens living high on their tax dollars every chance they got. The irony is mind-blowing
