Democrat Michelle Nunn, Daughter Of Ex-Senator, Says She's Running For Ga.'s US Senate Seat

Source: Associated Press

Georgia emerged as a battleground state Monday in the fight for control of the U.S. Senate as Democrat Michelle Nunn announced plans to run for her father's old seat, joining a crowded field of Republican contenders and setting off what will likely be a fiercely contested and costly race.

Nunn, the daughter of former Democratic Sen. Sam Nunn of Georgia and CEO of one of the nation's largest volunteer organizations, moved quickly to define herself as someone with the experience to set aside partisan rancor and build coalitions to solve the nation's problems.

"Wherever I go in Georgia people speak of their frustrations with what's not happening in Washington, that there is a focus on fighting instead of getting things done," Nunn said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I believe in the power of individuals to create change when they join together."

Nunn, 47, the daughter of former U.S. Sen. Sam Nunn, becomes the first well-known Democrat to enter the race for the seat of retiring U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, a Republican. Democrats see Nunn's candidacy as a chance to make inroads in a southern state that they once dominated, but where Republicans now control all statewide offices. Meanwhile, Republicans are making a push to win control of the U.S. Senate seat and cannot afford to lose the seat now held by Chambliss.

Sorry, but it will be a generation before a Democrat will come even close in a statewide race in Georgia.

It is currently 55.1% white only and 44.9% other. It also has a younger population than the USA as a whole. It looks like it should be ripe for a strong voter registration drive followed by a strong GOTV. Getting close sends a message that Georgia is turning purple and that could happen well before another generation passes. In fact, 2014 could depend on how far right the GOP candidate -- if he is like the guy in Indiana then it could flip in 2014.

And that would be a good thing. Hopefully South Carolina, Mississippi, and Alabama would follow. That would really be the nail in the coffin of the old south.

should, based on most voting trends in most of the country, even the South, be NON rigid and non-right wing. A Democratic campaign in that state should focus solely on the non-right wingers, and not bother trying to win any of the uptightnicks, because the uptightnicks and the ones who still use the six-letter slur for gays that begins with "f" and are STILL bitter about the end of Jim Crow are eternally lost to us.

They wouldn't even vote for Zombie Herman Talmadge.

On the issue of abortion, Nunn said that she believes abortions should be "safe, legal and rare and that women should be ultimately able to make this very difficult personal decision in concert with their doctor and their family."

Georgia is not ready to elect a progressive. She would vote with us on like 70% of the issues.

We usually get a much better turn out. The 2010 Senate race was lopsided to the (R), 20 or 30 points if I remember right.

But Romney only beat Obama by 9 points, 54/45%. So probably would have a better chance in presidential election year for her in that State.

It all depends on turnout and midterms can be unpredictable so maybe she can make some headway there.

If she's a real leader as her father has been she will be a blessing to Georgia and the whole country. We have to remember that this is Georgia and know who Chambliss and Gingrey are. Serving as Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman between Goldwater and Strom Thurmond you can imagine what he was up against. I do not like his views on many social issues but he stood against nuclear weapons, was close to Jimmy Carter, and, like Fulbright, changed our position in the world of nations. I only hope she has a good chance; I know my granddaughter in Atlanta will vote for her.
