GOP senators seek to prevent Detroit bailout

Source: Detroit News

A group of Republican senators wants to make sure the city of Detroit doesn’t get any taxpayer bailout.

A trio of senators authored an amendment Wednesday to a pending transportation bill to ensure no federal dollars be used to help state or local municipalities grappling with receivership.

“Detroit’s debt is a national poster-child of what can result when politicians enter into an unholy alliance with powerful unions at the expense of the local economy and the people who live there,” said sponsor Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis. in announcing his amendment.

... “Whatever the financial fiasco, however, it’s the responsibility of the local governments to fix,” said amendment author Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah. “The federal government will not step in, as this amendment makes clear, and bail them out. We’re not going to leave taxpayers on the hook because local governments can’t manage a budget and live within their means.”

We're the UNITED States. We're united so that when one falls, the rest of us pick up the slack and help that one up to their feet. It's like if your brother is down on his luck and is in hard times. You don't ignore family; you make your effort to help your family get back on track. We're the UNITED States, not the I'VE-GOT-MINE-NOW-FUCK-OFF States.

The previous Articles of Confederation basically encouraged the individual success and failure of the states independently and it was soon realized that the states would eat each other, allowing another country to take over.

What is happening now is they're letting Detroit die not so that another country can take over, but even worse, a private entity to take over. This privatization philosophy that the GOP has latched onto has gone too far. I foresee a major revolt and the Kochs and others will be seeing their heads on pikes.

It is fake. There are public employee unions here and all over the world that work just fine.

It's a deliberate part of an ongoing attack on unions in this country that started under Raygun.

Edit: and you may be sure that once they have destroyed the unions, they will start in on civil service protections too.

They want to change the UNITED States of America to the INCORPORATED States of America. Their Utopia is to have a complete plutocracy.

Have a different outcome in mind?

Just remember she was on the board of Walmart during the push for cheap foregin manufacturing.

Bill Clinton with nafta, other free trade agreements and china's Trade polices including most favorite nation status.

Plutocracy is right. Question is does DU bandwagon like good little soldiers?

Besides that, they want the sequester to first do the massive harm to governmental programs and governmental jobs. Privatization - meaning the 1% completely control the USA.

Mich. board OKs new Red Wings arena in Detroit
By DAVID EGGERT (Associated Press) | The Associated Press

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- A state board on Wednesday unanimously gave the go-ahead for a new Red Wings hockey arena in downtown Detroit to be paid for in part with $284 million in tax dollars even as the broke city works through bankruptcy proceedings.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and others defended against criticism that the $650 million project should be financed entirely with private money because the city currently can't provide basic services and retirees are facing cuts in their pensions.

Would it involve the federal government actually helping? Yes. Would it save retirees' pensions? Yes. The GOP has to oppose it.

No, we'll reserve that for your buddies. The TARP program kept corporate incompetence and greed afloat.

This is a preview of something we're going to be seeing more and more often.
