Egypt trial on U.S. democracy activists set for February 26

CAIRO | Sat Feb 18, 2012 7:16am EST

(Reuters) - An Egyptian court will start the trial on February 26 of activists from mostly American civil society groups accused of working illegally in Egypt, in a case which has strained U.S.-Egyptian ties.

A judicial source told Reuters that the 43 accused, including around 20 Americans, would go on trial next Sunday, charged with working in the country without proper legal registration.

The state new agency MENA said the hearing would take place at North Cairo Criminal Court.

Investigators swooped down on the offices of civil society groups on December 29, confiscating computers and other equipment and seizing cash and documents.

CAIRO: The Muslim Brotherhood has warned that Egypt may review its 1979 peace deal with Israel if the US cuts aid to the country.

Washington has said the aid is at risk due to an Egyptian probe into civil society groups that has resulted in charges against at least 43 activists, including 19 Americans who have been banned from leaving the country.

Here you're... right as it was expected... Meet lightning reaction on behalf of Egypt's ruling generals at the Western attempts to curtail financial support of the Egyptian "democratization"! People practically are taken as hostages. Now, for instance, the same refusal in the US to continue cooperation with the post-Mubarak Egyptian authorities can easily turn for some of the detainees into a death sentence. Evidently we are to pay for the "victory" of "democracy" in Egypt... and are to do it entirely. Islamic democracy as it is.
