Ohio cancels property tax rollback

After a tradition of some 40 years of subsidizing local taxes, Gov. John Kasich and Republicans in the Ohio House and Senate applied the brakes. Local governments and schools heading for the ballot in November to ask voters to support new or replacement levies will have to tell them that the price tags attached will be higher than they were previously told. The taxpayer will pay the entire tab for any new taxes approved.

As part of a broader tax package in the budget, GOP lawmakers have drawn the line on expansion of the so-called property tax rollback for all local taxpayers as well as the homestead exemption benefiting senior citizen and disabled homeowners. The provisions were approved without a single vote by Democratic lawmakers.

Kevin Haddad, Sylvania Township trustee and president of the Lucas County Township Association, said this represents just the latest blow to local governments after state budget cuts over the last two years and the elimination of the estate tax this year.
With the changes, statewide we will see people in townships not passing any levies when they realize theyre paying 100 percent of the tax, he said.

I just paid $540 2nd half tax. Our property taxes were over $1000.00 for the year. Next year, the taxes will be over 1200.00 As a senior citizens, we were a little shy of being eligible to sign up for the Homestead Exemption, now it will be gone. Republicans bulldozed this through with no thought of how it will effect small schools and communities in Ohio, actually their base. Just another republican way of cutting Americans off at the knees and leaving them to bleed to death.

(16,967 posts)don't realize most people can't vote on all local issues. You have to live in the school district to vote on a levy. We don't live in the city, so we can't vote on city issues, even if they affect us. Even if people are willing to vote support for schools or fire departments, the school district, or township or city government won't have enough money collected in their district. On the other hand asshole Kasick says the business corridor on the turnpike should be subsidized, with taxpayers money. That would be all taxpayers, all over the state. How did Ohio get stuck with these venal turds?

(502 posts)I also pay just over $1,000 a year, my 1,060 sf Columbus home is probably worth about $75,000. With your location, I imagine your home is considerably more.

(16,199 posts)But being in a city, there are more taxpayers per sq mile, hence far lower rates. Major advantage to urban areas.

(22,651 posts)state will grab your house and sell it on the courthouse steps to all the collectors of cheap foreclosed homes.
Neighborhood associations across the usa do the same thing. Don't pay your fees and the daily fines? They also will take your home and sell it. Many times those who sit on the neighborhood board are buyers of the cheap 'foreclosed neighborhood homes'
republicans always bitch about federal gov, but they let the local 'small' gov, fee and tax locals right out of their homes.

The teabagger town I live close to is trying to get levies passed to build a new school because it is "outdated" and 'and the ever popular 'everyone else has a new school and we will fall behind' meme.
I wonder if the paper will run this story because it is really pushing for the new school.
I am so hoping that we can get rid of that smirking shithead and clean up the statehouse at the next election.

(1,408 posts)I met Boner in the 80's at a Jim Buchy dinner. My wife worked at the country club where the dinner was and I was hired as security. He was a cheap, drunken asshole then and has only gotten worse.
This county is teabagger heaven even with the crappy economy that's still hanging around.
Unbelievably most sheeple are still supporting the drunken old sot.
The picture of him in the weekly newspaper of Agent Orange's column that they run is at least 20-25 years old. Nothing like the worn out drunk that he looks like now.
I've been to Middletown. Seems like a nice town to drive through.
If you live there and like it I was just trying to be funny. I used to drive through it several times a year to get to Lebanon and Hidden Valley Fruit Farm when they have festivals.

I couldn't agree more about Boehner! It's difficult to explain to anyone who doesn't live here why we can't vote him out.

Then we moved Darke. I hated it then, not to happy now.
Wish I could afford to move.
Guess I'll just have to stay here and piss off republicans.
