Bagged salad caused parasite outbreak, Iowa officials say
Source: MSNBC
Prepackaged salad mix appears to be the cause of an outbreak of food poisoning caused by a rare parasite that started in Iowa and Nebraska and may have sickened more than 370 people in 16 states, Iowa's top food inspector said Tuesday.
"The evidence points to a salad mix containing iceberg and romaine lettuce, as well as carrots and red cabbage as the source of the outbreak reported in Iowa and Nebraska," said Steven Mandernach, chief of the Food and Consumer Safety Bureau of the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals.
Iowa officials did not name the brand or the producer of the bagged salad mix and they did not say whether it was an imported or domestic product.
"Iowans should continue eating salads as the implicated prepackaged mix is no longer in the state's food supply chain," Mandernach added.

(22,877 posts)I live in western Iowa.. and we have had an outbreak of cyclospia (sp?) here.. and the only bagged salads that I have ever seen.. (granted I do not look for them that often) has been Dole.. I cannot think of another company that supplies premixed salads locally..

(84,711 posts)Cyclospora is a rare parasite typically spread by feces in contaminated food or water. It causes lingering diarrhea and other flu-like symptoms. It can be treated with common antibiotics, but the test to confirm cyclospora infection isn't commonly performed and must be specially requested.
Iowa officials said they would continue working with other states, the FDA and the CDC as the investigation continues. Health departments reporting illnesses include those in Iowa, Nebraska, Texas, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, New York City and Ohio.

(6,785 posts)So people that ate it and are still within the incubation period can get treatment before becoming ill. If someone with a weakened immune system dies because they didn't know they needed to go get tested, everyone involved in the decision to keep it secret should lose their jobs, and in a just world they'd go to jail for it.

(84,711 posts)Different people ate different things...and some was travel related. They've tracked some to eating salad...but, they can't test because the salad is gone.
I agree that companies names should be reported...but,in this instance, so far it seems the parasite takes so long to show up and can be found in so many places that it isn't an instant thing to know for sure what product it was and the supplier. Also that one has to have the condition long enough that a doctor will "request the test." Could be that many more will go to doctor and get tested and that will reveal a consistent connection.

(22,877 posts)because so many people eat bagged salads that say they have been washed or triple washed.. and you just never know.. without washing them again (though some of these things can only be killed by heat)

(15,882 posts)combined the names of the Cyclospora and Republicanus. The first is a micro-organism, separate and distinct from the virus that is Republicanus.
While Cyclospora and Republicanus can both be deadly, the invasion of the Republicanus is considered the more serious of the two. Typical exposure to the Cyclospora generally only harms those whom the micro-organism invades, whereas the virus Republicanus not only attaches itself to its victim but can harm millions of people who may come into contact with the victim, reportedly with such conditions as poverty, hunger, an extreme fear of the most harmless of people, and the inability to understand when regulation of food products may actually be to their benefit.
For this reason, including frequent washing of the hands and body in case of contact, one should endeavor to keep their distance from the victims of this insidious disease. Those most seriously affected, the carriers of this debilitating condition should only be approached by those with the appropriate safety clothing and training.
Here is a picture of a primary victim of Republicanus. Note: This should be shielded from the view of small children, but it is important that one is able to recognize this threat should it approach them:
Note the orange pallor and watery eyes. Although not evident in the picture, there is also significant atrophy of the brain tissue.
Please be safe, and if you feel you have been the victim of Republicanus, please contact your local Democratic Party office, We are working towards a cure.
Thank you, and I am sorry about my confusion. And wash your salad before eating it, even if it says it is already washed.

Of course they are protecting the corporation rather than the consumer. Sure, it's been taken out of the system but consumers deserve to know who is at fault and if it is a repeat violator.

Even though it says it's been prewashed, you have to rinse that salad like you do any other vegetable.

(30,252 posts)Not that meat doesn't have its own risks, but cooking it until it's well done takes care of most of those microorganisms, anyway, so cook that sucker on high and don't forget the freakin' Worcestershire sauce.
I like garden burgers, too - they're great with ketchup and mustard. I can be flexible. But they get the well done treatment, too.

There have been so many outbreaks of nasties with the bagged salad that it all scares me. I bought some last week and felt like I was playing Russian roulette with my intestines. Stupid, I know.
