Syria to let in UN chemical weapons investigation

Source: Ma'an

UN inspectors will go to Syria soon to investigate three sites where chemical weapons attacks have been reported, the United Nations said Wednesday.

President Bashar Assad's government had blocked the inspectors since calling for a UN inquiry into the use of the banned arms in March.

"The mission will travel to Syria as soon as possible to contemporaneously investigate three of the reported incidents," said UN spokesman Martin Nesirky.

The announcement followed an accord reached with the Syrian government when two UN envoys went to Damascus last we

I don't think the regime is letting the UN in to then turn around and blame it for chemical weapons. Comrade Grumpy Aug 2013 #1

They must have good evidence rebels were doing the nasty thing. Otherwise, why bother?

Syrian Government officials, but they got other independent groups to come in before the U.N. Russian scientists already gathered and tested evidence, before the U.N. They also got testimony from another U.N. group earlier under Carlo Del Pointe. The United States disputed her claims.

Iraqi authorities also have evidence, the Al Qaeda group in Iraq possess some forms of home made chemical weapons. They also claim they uncovered chemical supplies from the rebels that were made in Saudi Arabia. They have also allowed some journalists, to accompany the Syrian Army on the battle field, to film some of the conflicts and examine mortars, including victims from a rebel attack. They are pointing the finger at Al Nusra. Some of them have disappeared, shot at, killed or kidnapped.

The Russians also claim they have information, the Turkish Government was covering up information about the rebels in Turkey possessing chemical weapons. They also claim they have proof of Israel supplying the rebels with weapons. This was before the Saudi Government recently claimed they were going to buy armnaments from the Israelis to supply to the rebels. It seems to be just another paticipatory move, because their secret was exposed. It seems everytime the Syrian Army discover something on the battle field, there is another explanation to discredit it. I've noticed this consistent trend in the reporting.

That is what you learn, if you pay attention to both sides and not pre judge any of them. You have two different views. The War is a stalemate from the rebel side and the Syrian Army is kicking their asses according to the Assad side. The people are supporting the rebels or they see them as Foreign Terrorists. Syria is claiming Hezbullah and Iran aren't very significant in the fight, but the rebels claiming the Syrian Army can't win without them.

Then you look at other information claiming the Syrian Army has been rapidly reclaiming territory and the casualties of Hezbullah and Iranian troops. Either those guys are good fighters or the rebels are notorious liars. According to their own data, only 145 Hezbullah fighters out of thousands have been killed and no reports even show up about Iranians' deaths.

For instance, if one of the sites is the one that France, using samples provided by the rebels but with no chain of custody, analyzed samples from and declared them to be sarin.

That was the line that the Assad government "dared" to cross and triggered, at least for rhetorical purposes, the revised American arms policy vis-a-vis the rebels. If the red line was crossed by the rebels, American rhetoric suddenly as a problem: The red line was crossed by those we'd be arming.

Oddly, I'd find that wryly amusing.
