'Sit Down and Shut Up!' Harry Reid Tells Noisy Senate.
Source: nyt/reuters
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Thursday urged his inattentive colleagues, long referred to as members of "the world's most deliberative body," to "sit down and shut up!" . . .
"The Senate is not in order. The Senate will be in order," Baldwin pleaded as many of the chamber's 100 senators kept talking during a roll-call vote on a judicial nominee.
"Madam President," Reid instructed Baldwin, "have everyone sit down and shut up! OK?"
Senators did quiet down, at least for a bit, but they were clearly anxious to move on as they neared the start of their month-long August recess.

(10,260 posts)when they go home is when they say all the REALLY dumb shit, because they think they need to impress all the idiots that voted for them lol. If I were a member of Congress I would pay attention, and when they all got back to work, I would have a stack of notecards in my pocket...
Just 'cause I'm a dick that way.

they are way overpaid and the amount of vacation they receive is DISGUSTING - how exactly are they supposed to relate to the average worker?
A Simple Game
(9,214 posts)There is no longer a need for our Senators and Representatives to live in Washington. They should stay in their own state and/or district for most of the year. Maybe go to Washington and live in dormitories for a month to take care of formal affairs. If they had to live in their own districts it would make it harder for lobbyists to see many of them and easier for constituents to see just how they live and react to actual people.
I suspect most of them don't want to live among the people that they represent.

(10,260 posts)Make DC the HAMMER of Popular Debate, the Place where bad ideas and theorys go to die.
But, that would require that Congressperosns were able to understand Debate aind Philospohy the way they were intended...kind of like needing to know Calculus in order to work for NASA...If Public Debate at that level should require the same kind of Rigor and Ability as the aforementioned Math, I think most of them would fail the Addition Test.
The only way it would work would be if the LOCAL Press were worth a damn, otherwise, if you're out in the boonies with no one asking any questions, I would think it would be pretty damn easy to sweep a lot of dirt under the rug (lobbying and whatnot)...

(9,214 posts)we can now all be the press. And I know people that would make it their job to watch my congressman like a hawk and everyone would know their every move. People would know he went to the bathroom before he even wiped.

(10,260 posts)if you happen to have a Senator who sits on the Intelligence Commitee would be to show up and say
Person 1: "How did you vote on the question of Arms to Syrian Rebels?"
Senator: "That's Classified. Next question."
Person 2: "How did you vote on the question of Arms to Syrian Rebels?"
Senator : "Next question."
Person 3: "How did you vote on the question of Arms to Syrian Rebels?"
And repeat this until they KNOW BEYOND DOUBT that they pissed us off with this. It's not even about Arms to Rebels (I can live with being on the losing side of that debate if I have to), it's that they think WE WHO PUT THEM IN OFFICE, are not "entitled" enough to know what they think on our behalf. Fuck that noise, I say we start taking these people's HEADS off lol. One or 2 won't do, it would take a ROOM full, all saying, basically, fuck you, you WILL ANSWER my question.

Obviously, if enough are upset after living through the most ridiculous periods in history, that has witnessed a hyper-partisan, politicize everything climate that has frozen everything but Wall Street, they will come armed with questions that will not get straight answers!
