Spanish Train Driver Can't Explain Why He Crashed

Source: Mass Transit

The driver of the train that derailed in northwestern Spain, killing 79 people, has said he was traveling at twice the speed limit when he approached a treacherous turn.

But, sitting uneasily before a judge, he waved his hands in front of his face and was at a loss to explain why he didn't slow down in a courtroom video released by a Spanish newspaper Thursday.

"I can't explain it," Francisco Jose Garzon Amo said, shifting in his chair and looking around. "I still don't understand how I didn't see ... mentally, or whatever. I just don't know."

is saying he doesn't know why he didn't realize in time to slow down that the well-nown treacherous curve was coming up. Since he was going more than twice the posted speed limit for that curve, slowing down in time was the missing ingredient.

He did hit the brakes before the curve, but only enough to drop from 118 mph to 95 mph, which was still almost twice the 50 mph speed limit for that curve.

All that information is quite clearly explained in the article, but if people don't read the whole article, they might misunderstand, but the info is in the excerpt opposed:
