North Korea threatens South Korea over drills
Updated 3h 29m ago
PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) North Korea threatened Sunday to attack South Korea, accusing it of planning provocative live-fire drills near their disputed sea border amid persistent tension on the divided peninsula.
The North's military said in a statement that South Korea planned naval shelling drills Monday in the waters around five front-line islands off the western coast, where it said the North maintains its sovereignty.
South Korean defense and military officials said they had no immediate knowledge of such drills. They said South Korea plans joint anti-submarine drills with the United States this week, but the training site is further south.
"Such move of the warlike forces is a premeditated military provocation
to drive the overall situation on the Korean peninsula into the phase of war," a North Korean western military command said in a statement.

(10,340 posts)Is there any legitimate reason to conduct massive live-fire military exercises so close to North Korea's territory?
I'm pretty sure the US would be highly pissed off if Iran and Cuba conducted live-fire exercises near Key West.

(17,644 posts)It said nothing about "Live Fire" drills being conducted now or in the near future.
Besides - I don't think North Korea minds the Live Fire Drills since they commonly lob small arms fire across the DMZ just to keep everyone awake

(10,340 posts)Really?
South Korea regularly conducts artillery drills from front-line islands and a 2010 drill at one of the five islands, Yeonpyeong, triggered a North Korean artillery bombardment that killed four South Koreans.
Also, the US and South Korea routinely host massive military drills near North Korean territory.

North Korea also conducts live fire drills, or are you forgetting about NK shelling an Island two years ago?
Crisis Status in South Korea After North Shells Island
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/24/world/asia/24korea.html?pagewanted=all
SEOUL, South Korea The South Korean military went to crisis status on Tuesday and threatened military strikes after the North fired dozens of shells at a South Korean island, killing two of the Souths soldiers and setting off an exchange of fire in one of the most serious clashes between the two sides in decades.
President Lee Myung-bak met with security-related ministers and senior aides in the underground situation room at the Blue House, the presidential office and residence, and promised a strenuous retaliation if there was any further provocation, said the chief presidential spokesman, Hong Sang-pyo.
The North blamed the South for starting the exchange; the South acknowledged firing test shots in the area but denied that any had fallen in the Norths territory. It was in the same area that a South Korean naval vessel, the Cheonan, was sunk in March, killing 46 sailors. Seoul blamed a North Korean torpedo attack; the North has denied any role.
The United States, Britain and Japan on Tuesday condemned the latest attack. The White House called on North Korea to halt its belligerent action. American officials tracking the episode said that a total of 175 artillery shells had been exchanged by the two sides.

(6,670 posts)The US is deliberately, willfully provoking them in every way possible, trying to drive them into some desperate action that would justify invasion and theft of their resources.

WHAT resources? A starving populace? Antiquated and crumbling infrastructure? They DO have some flashy parades I suppose...but they'd be hard to steal.

Please inform me of these resources, but Kim Jong-Yoda, his daddy Kim Il-Sung and his son, Joba-the-Kim, should have been "robbing" the Earth of these resources since 1952, but haven't.
Please actually live in Korea before saying crap like that, as I did for a couple of years. . .hence the DU screen name.

(10,849 posts)And since a N Korea sub sank a S Korean corvette last year out of the blue it's very understandable to do so.
If another country had sunk one of our Navy ships for no reason we'd be at war.
