Judge halts trial in Fort Hood shooting rampage

Source: dallasnews

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — The standby attorney for the soldier charged in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting rampage accused Maj. Nidal Hasan on Wednesday of deliberately charting a course toward a conviction and death sentence, abruptly halting the trial after only one day.

Lt. Col. Kris Poppe, Hasan’s lead court-appointed standby attorney, said he is willing to step in and be Hasan’s defense lawyer. But he asked that his responsibilities as co-counsel be minimized if Hasan, who is representing himself at trial, continues to work toward being executed.

It is “clear his goal is to remove impediments or obstacles to the death penalty and is working toward a death penalty,” Poppe told the judge overseeing the case at the Texas military base.

Hasan responded: “I object. That’s a twist of the facts.”

The judge, Col. Tara Osborn, then cleared the courtroom.

PLENTY of people deserve the needle. Child killers, terrorists, mass murderers, etc. With 1 caveat; only when there is absolutely NO doubt as to the guilt of the person.
But I know you'll still disagree, and thats ok.

Lock his sorry ass up for the rest of his life, but I don't support the death penalty. Doesn't matter if he's mentally competent/incompetent, delusional, wants to be a martyr, or whatever. Give him a just and fair trial, and if found guilty lock him up.

Hasan should be locked up under suicide watch forever. When he does pass away his death should not be reported. IMHO.

Just like bin Laden was never going to make it to trial. Instead, the story was floated of him hiding behind women and children, thus insuring there would be no legacy of martyrdom.

so he'll have a wider selection of virgins in heaven. Much like drinking until the late hours at a bar, the choices look a lot better at the end of the night (after drunkenness and desperation) so he wants to beat the crowd.

but it just blows my mind that this guy was a Major. Per Wikipedia: "DOPMA guidelines suggest 80% of captains should be promoted to major after serving a minimum of three years at their present rank and after attaining nine to eleven years of cumulative commissioned service."

He was a doctor and I can tell you from personal experience that doctors in the military get away with a lot so they can keep decent ones. After all, they make a pittance in the military compared to what they would make in the private sector.

But it's accurate that Doctors may be commissioned at a rank higher than 2nd Lieutenant or Ensign.

If he was so concerned about the misery of those he considered his equals in Afghanistan, he should have deployed and used his tax payer funded medical training to help the people he claimed to love so much.

He could have defected over there and done some good. But oh no, he has to play avenging angel and kill people who were unarmed, and he knew they couldn't stop him:

Staff Sgt. Alonzo M. Lunsford Jr.

...Sergeant Lunsford, who was unarmed, was shot once in the head and six times in the body. He had played dead, and then tried to exit the building, but Major Hasan followed him outside and shot him in the back, he said...

“I will be cross-examined by the man who shot me,” said Sergeant Lunsford, 46, who retired from the Army and remains blind in his left eye. “You can imagine all the emotions that are going to be coming up...”

The Army has spent more than $5 million on the case, surrounding the outside of the courthouse with giant sand-packed barriers that protect against explosions and transporting Major Hasan for hearings by helicopter from the nearby Bell County Jail, where he is being held at Army expense.

The Army has also paid for his military defense lawyers, paralegals and experts as well as the rental costs for a trailer next to the courthouse that one lawyer called “the Hasan hut,” where he works under tight security...
