Nothing else at this time on this story. I'm sure there will be more soon.

(7,820 posts)It made sense the body was probably Ethan's, but still sad to get the confirmation. My thoughts are with the surviving family, and truly hoping Hannah can be found alive soon.

(86,378 posts)I heard that both the perp and the girl were spotted by horseback pack campers in, I think, western Idaho on a trail out in the wilds. that was the only news I heard today from this area but I guess he decided to head north into the Rockies. I'll look around for something with a link.

(86,378 posts)I had to work late, just got on the site and this was the first thread I saw about it.
The Frank Church is a truly wilderness place with bears and cats that could be dangerous, wolves not so much. It's over 2 million acres and a lot of hard to manage terrain. He could, theoretically poach some elk, bighorn sheep or deer to eat but I think you need a permit to camp out there, maybe not, but there are few roads and trails and lots of steep, rocky inclines. Hard place to find someone on the run if they know their way around the place, like the Native Americans who evaded the army for decades. But some creep from California, probably not. they could get into trouble in a hurry... like broken limbs, cuts, falling, bad weather like lightning and trees falling during wind (all common this time of year) and wildfire...
A good bush pilot would likely be able to spot them from the air. I've flown over the place and it's not hard to see between the trees in most places. Hopefully they'll be found soon and the girl rescued, she must be terrified.

(86,378 posts)they may well need to make one. It's getting into the low 40s at night over here at approximately the same elevation and they could be higher (I'm close to 7.000ft) and the last time I was over there it was in the 90s during the day and frosting at night in July. And the lake and river water is pretty damned cold. He might be an outdoorsman but I wonder where he got his experience, the Sierras are NOTHING like the Northern Rockies. I've been here for decades and I am apprehensive about camping out there without a lot of backup and planning. Hope he doesn't get her killed or kill her. If he does and leaves her body exposed, she'll be harder to find once the wildlife get to her.
What an awful thing.

(86,378 posts)is approximately 2.2 million acres with surrounding National Forests, BIG. WILD. PLACE. Been there several times, flown over it... several predators of the four-legged variety too. It's probably the best time to be up there as far as temperatures but this is big thunderstorm with wind season and dry lightning that starts fires... much of this area has major beetle killed trees and is very dry... thunderstorms don't produce a lot of precip this time of year but plenty of lightning fires rise up in a hurry overnight. Hope they find them and get the girl back alive.
