By Stephen M. Silverman
Concert and recording superstar Eydie Gormé, who performing everything from ballads to bossa nova with singing partner and husband Steve Lawrence made an indelible impression on American audiences during the swingin' '60s, died Saturday afternoon in Las Vegas, her spokesman, Howard Bragman, tells PEOPLE. She was 84.
"Legendary singer and performer Eydie Gorme passed away peacefully today at Sunrise Hospital following a brief illness," Bragman said in a statement. "She was surrounded by her husband, son and other loved ones at the time of her death."
In his own statement, Steve Lawrence said: "Eydie has been my partner on stage and in life for more than 55 years. I fell in love with her the moment I saw her and even more the first time I heard her sing."
He added: "While my personal loss is unimaginable, the world has lost one of the greatest pop vocalists of all time."

(112,143 posts)I was familiar with her by watching her on the Carol Burnett Show. I didn't appreciate all of the singing at the time due to my young age, but in hindsight recognize her talents.

(9,265 posts)Eydie and Mom were the same age and we just lost Mom too (in May). Condolences to her family.
Seemed like all the other husband and wife acts (Lucy and Desi, Sonny and Cher, Ike and Tina) ended up divorced except Steve and Eydie.

(50,254 posts)And my deepest condolences to Steve Lawrence. That will be a massive thing to wake up alone each day after 55 years of marriage.

(81,220 posts)Their stuff was fun, just as their personalities were. The kind of stuff that was on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show" frequently - which I never missed. I just saw an amazing photo - Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme with Johnny Carson and his then-wife Joanne. They don't make 'em like that anymore. Nor many marriages like that, either - in OR out of show biz. They brought people a lot of friendly pleasantness and good entertainment. God just gained a great soloist.

(40,656 posts)lonely when this happens, that an entire world is disappearing when it was so familiar. Everyone and everything and place I ever loved was with me then. I feel sad tonight about this.

As Joni Mitchell put it
"And the seasons, they go 'round and 'round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're traveling on a carousel of time.
We can't go back we can only look behind
to where we came,
And go 'round and 'round and 'round
In the Circle Game".
Hope that helps a little.

(14,087 posts)I grew up with Eydie & Steve. I always wanted to love the person I was married to like they did....you could see it in their eyes, and their body language. (Luckily, I do love the person I'm married to like that! )
It's just so sad that she is gone.
