AMES, Iowa (AP) - Sen. Ted Cruz on Saturday continued his call for cutting off funding for President Barack Obama's health care law and told conservative Christians that congressional lawmakers can't be counted on to do it.
The Texas Republican, a tea-party favorite and a possible presidential candidate in 2016, drew a standing ovation at the Family Leadership Summit with his denouncement of the health care initiative labeled "Obamacare" by its critics.
"That reaction right there shows how we win this fight," Cruz said. "If I was sitting in the Senate cloakroom, the reaction would be fundamentally different. If we have to depend on Washington, it will never be done."
As he has in remarks to other conservatives, Cruz asserted that a grassroots effort would be needed. "The only way we win this fight is if the American people rise up and hold our elected officials accountable," he said.

Sen. Ted Cruz, (R-Texas), speaks during the family leadership summit in Ames, Iowa Saturday Aug. 10, 2013. Republican presidential hopefuls are hoping to impress conservative voters at the conference organized by an influential Christian group. The daylong event will be one of many candidate cattle calls in the grueling run-up to the 2016 presidential election. None of the potential contenders appearing Saturday has declared candidacy. My biggest fear is that one of the crazies get the nod. Santorum, Cruz, Paul, someone worse....
When they run a true believer type they win. For some reason, people like authoritarian, tough talking, blame it on the "other" candidates. They like all that anti-government crap. Mainly because they don't realize how much benefit they get from government.
Obama could have lost last year. He probably would have if they went with a hard right guy instead of Mittens.

(21,506 posts)Despite the spin otherwise. Obama won in a landslide against a candidate that was acceptable to the majority of the republican base.
Also if you look at the house and senate races it was the teabaggers and other wackjobs almost exclusively that gave up their seats.
The chimp was installed not elected. He outright lost against gore and was installed by the supreme court. The win over Kerry was questionable and many say stolen as well. Given roves reaction to the Ohio count I am inclined to believe it.

(22,143 posts)Bush was clearly an incompetent boob. The fact that so many people didn't recognize that fact is what scares me. Reagan won by ridiculous margins and was as dumb as Chimpy if not more so.
I just don't have a lot of faith in the People I guess. Our choice always seems to be either vote for the not so great person to avoid the awful person.

(24,780 posts)Reagan was an actor. He was at home in front of a camera and knew how to deliver a line. He did it very well. His views were known, but were mainstream with the old WWII generation. Bush isn't a lunatic, he is just stupid as dirt. But in Texas he had people like Bob Bullock that told him as governor, just sit down, shut up and we'll make you look good. He was a conservative Texas governor, but gor the most part so we're the Democratic governors for decades. Then he was a complete idiot puppet for the far right as prez. But the guy never had an original thought because he is so fucking stupid. But he is no lunatic. He's too stupid to be.
America rejects extremists. Always has. So I say bring on the 2016 GOP clown car and make it crazier than in 12 to really poison the dangerous candidates like Rubio or Christie.

(13 posts)He has a permanently disgruntled look on his face and looks like he ALWAYS ready to complain about something. This is what happens when the LEAST liked kid in school grows up and gets in a position of power. The guy is the grey cloud that doesnt want anyone around him to make too much noise or have too much fun. It baffles me that the right is following a guy that doesnt want to govern but just wants grumble, complain and block. His whiny weak voice grates on my ears, THIS is GOP leadership!? Damn, I want him to run for President so Hillary can GRIND his face and his 1950's policies into the dirt with her high heel.

(9,005 posts)All we are hearing is negativity. And now, allegedly, 60% of Americans polled don't want the law....I don't really believe those figures, but I heard them from different sources.
Volaris
(10,269 posts)20-30% of the aforementioned 60 don't want to keep it because they think it doesn't DO ENOUGH regarding delivery of access to Healthcare. They want SOMETHING BETTER. If elected Dem's had forced a vote on any kind of Public Option, I bet they would have gotten it, and People would be signing up in droves. Not-for-Profit, self-enrolled VOLUNTARY Medicare, for anyone who's under 55 and wants to pay a small, paycheck-deductible monthly premium?
Also, what makes this loon think that if the American People DO actually rise up and hold their politicians "accountable" that his name will somehow NOT be on the list of those to be removed from their office for covering the ass of the 1%?
Oh, that's right. HE'S not a politician. He's the Republican Messiah. My bad.

(256 posts)medical bills. I am a state employee, I know Texas, but still so far a state, and my out of pockets expenses for medical issues not my doing, in the past year alone, are $37,700. In addition, an enzyme I need, Pancrease, with a $15 copay, is not available because they don't make the generic any more. They make a formulary, Pancreaze, that my insurance won't pay for, and costs $200 per bottle, and I will need it the rest of my life. If you are waiting for me to defend Obamacare----NEVER. That hybrid piece of shit legislation only forces millions more people into a corrupt for-profit health care system that kills people. Oh, and generic B-12, with a $5.00 copay, in short supply. But the inhaled B-12, Nascobal, readily available, with a $75 copay and costs over $400 per vial/month, readily available. I could go on, but hopefully this will help explain why someone like me, who votes Democratic in every election, am furious with Obama and the spineless democrats. Fuck them too--Baucus, Mary Landrieu.
