Anti-abortion protesters force Portland’s rock ’n’ roll deli to close

Source: Bangor Daily News

Mike’s Restaurant on Congress Street closes next week after three years of providing patrons affordable meals and a place to rock out.

“It will be a sad day when they close,” said Chris Mitchell, waiting at the counter as an Allman Brothers song ripped through the funky space.

For three years, the Sun Life Financial employee has started his mornings with a breakfast burrito here. After next week, “I will have to bring something to work,” he said. “That will make life less enjoyable.”

Behind the counter, owner Mike Fink is not sad, but relieved.

For the last year Fink has been fighting anti-abortion advocates protesting outside Planned Parenthood, a few steps away, on Friday and Saturday mornings.

The horrific gauntlet these women must face to exercise their right to a legal medical procedure is infuriating. I can't believe we're still fighting these battles.

It takes numbers and consistency, though.

I really, really hate conservatives. Forgot who said it but, 'Conservatism' is a political stance that attempts to justify selfishness. Now they've gone from selfish to aggressively destructive.

Stopping into Mike’s for the first time Friday, Robert Horn, a mason on lunch break, was disturbed to hear why the deli was closing.

“The circumstance is ridiculous,” he said. “People need better hobbies than to infringe on other people’s decisions.”

Destroying other people's businesses is all they're accomplishing here. I hope they've noticed that the Planned Parenthood clinic they're so busy hating apparently has no plans to close.

Just being honest. The protesters weren't obstructing access to the shop, but were just in the vicinity. I wouldn't let it stop me from going to a place that I liked. THAT SAID, I can see that it could drive down business from those who are uncomfortable - I think it raises the point that right-wing businesses could be targeted too through various means, to at least make their customers uncomfortable.

And the YMCA still exists. I guess the Maine protesters must be a lot more nutty.

“I decided kids holding signs of dead babies isn’t good for business,” he said.

I think by calling them dead babies instead of aborted fetuses undercuts his case, diction-wise.
