LIMA, Peru — Peru's president says security forces believe they have killed two top leaders of the Shining Path rebel group in combat in a southeastern coca-growing region.

President Ollanta Humala told reporters that three rebels were killed Sunday night in the firefight in the Apurimac and Ene river valley region. He said it was believed that the Shining Path leaders known as Comrade Gabriel and Comrade Alipio were among them. He said DNA tests were being done.
