Gunmen kill 44 at Nigeria mosque

Source: BBC

At least 44 worshippers have been shot dead at a mosque in northeast Nigeria, officials in Borno state say.

The killings took place during dawn prayers on Sunday morning, although news only emerged on Monday.

The attack occurred in the town of Konduga, 35km (22 miles) from the state capital Maiduguri.

The gunmen are suspected to be from the Islamist group Boko Haram, which has killed thousands in northern Nigeria since 2009.

One isolated incident and we get more Islam bashing.

You don't judge an entire religion based on one rare incident.

That's just news in the past 10 days or so (the classrooms and widows aren't all from that period, of course, but you can see it's gone on for enough time for those figures)

Why are they doing this, that is, what do they want?

Looks like no one can stop them, sounds like some kind of genocide.

I'm going to check out all those links, I'd never heard of this group before.

Boko Haram is Sunni and they are after the "infidel" Shia, Christians etc. in Nigeria.

This ancient civil war is gaining strength with a fury in N Africa, the Mid East etc.

We're in for a bumpy ride.

Who are Nigeria's Boko Haram Islamists?

Nigeria's militant Islamist group Boko Haram - which has caused havoc in Africa's most populous country through a wave of bombings - is fighting to overthrow the government and create an Islamic state.

But Boko Haram was not only interested in education. Its political goal was to create an Islamic state, and the school became a recruiting ground for jihadis to fight the state.

Does reporting on it constitute "Islam bashing"?

It's possible that reporting something true might cause readers to overgeneralize and improperly assign the responsibility for this to "Islam."

As opposed to a particular kind of Islam.

It's not really all that unusual to make this kind of "anything that could possibly give rise to prejudice is itself a form of prejudice" leap in thinking.

Also, it thus introduces Islam bashing, doesn't it now? Or a kind of liberal bashing perhaps.
