Bing calls for removal of petroleum coke along Detroit River

Mayor Dave Bing stepped into the controversial petroleum coke debate Tuesday, calling for the company storing the material along the Detroit River to remove it all before the end of the month.
Detroit Bulk Storage has stored massive piles of the black, coal-like product at its property in southwest Detroit since the beginning of the year. The presence of the pet coke and the companys inability to keep dust from the piles from being blown periodically into surrounding neighborhoods and waterways raised concerns among residents in Detroit and Windsor.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality urged the company to move the pet coke to a more suitable site. While pet coke is low toxicity, dust from any source is undesirable in the air, department spokesman Brad Wurfel said earlier this month.
City and state elected officials expected Detroit Bulk Storage to have the pet coke removed by Aug. 9. Since the deadline passed, Bing stepped into the picture. . .
