CAIRO (AP) -- Egypt's interim president has declared a monthlong state of emergency to combat worsening violence after riot police moved to clear two sprawling encampments of supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.
A statement by the office of President Adly Mansour said Wednesday that the state of emergency takes effect at 4 p.m. (1400 GMT, 10 a.m. EDT). It didn't provide details but says Mansour also ordered the armed forces to support the police in their efforts to restore law and order and protect state facilities.
The Health Ministry, meanwhile, has raised the casualty toll from nationwide clashes nationwide to 95 killed and 874 injured

Probably will still not consider this to be a coup.
Edit to add - predicted correctly. Just lame references to two weeks ago.

(42,239 posts)At the Rabaa al-Adawiya camp, the immediate reaction to the emergency law has been one of derision.
"On 25 January 2011, we went out and refused the Mubarak - and one of the things we refused was his emergency law," said Ahmed Khadr, an engineer on the fringes of the sit-in who said he supported the protesters, but not Morsi's presidency.
"We continue to refuse it, and all other forms of oppression. The people enforcing it are Mubarak's men."
Nearby, Amar Ali - a former network administrator in Morsi's office, prior to his overthrow - promised to reject the law's restrictions.
"We will remain on the streets regardless of the emergency law. The law will make people angrier."

(385 posts)The mb won 3 elections in a row. The people of Egypt have the right to elect and be ruled by elected leaders.
The Egyptian army and secular elite have no right to reimpose army dictatorship while brazenly claiming its the people's will. The people's will was in parliament (67%), in constitution (64%) and dr morsi (52%). This coup is similar to coup by general pinochet in Chile. Dr Allende was also popularly elected, kidnapped by the army and accused of various nefarious plots all dreamt up by the coup plotters and their Washington enablers.
Dr Allende was accused of being a communist, a soviet dupe bent on destroying Chilean society and establishing a soviet dictatorship. All brazen lies.
