At least 17 killed across country in Egypt clashes

Source: AP

CAIRO (AP) — Security and health officials say at least 17 people have been killed across Egypt after tens of thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters took to the streets in defiance of a military-imposed state of emergency following bloodshed earlier this week.

Security officials say eight people were killed in the Nile Delta province of Dumyat north of Cairo and four people were killed in the Suez Canal city of Ismailiya. The cause of their deaths was not immediately clear.

Officials say five policemen also were killed across the country.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

They are being joined by some who may not agree with them but disagree with military rule aka a coup.

Dozens dead in Egypt's 'day of rage' clashes

In the worst of the violence, a correspondent for Al Jazeera said at least 41 people were killed in Cairo's Ramses Square on Friday as anti-coup protesters were fired on by government forces. A protester, Said Mohammed, told Al Jazeera that the crowds were shot at by men in helicopters.

"Helicopters started to shoot us as we were walking. My friend was shot in the neck and he died," he said. "This was the first time we saw helicopters shooting. There were people shooting from the windows."

Elsewhere, the Reuters news agency said eight protesters had been killed in the city of Damietta, while four were killed in clashes with security forces in the Egyptian city of Ismailia, notheast of Cairo.

BBC:

Thirteen people died in Cairo, health and security sources say, with many dead and wounded near Ramses Square.

Two days ago the protesters' camps were broken up, leaving at least 638 dead and causing international condemnation.

Outside Cairo, there are 12 reported deaths in Nile Delta cities and 13 in the rest of Egypt.

Reuters:

Muslim Brotherhood protests plunged into violence across Egypt on Friday, with around 50 killed in Cairo alone on a "Day of Rage" called by Islamist followers of ousted President Mohamed Mursi to denounce a police crackdown.

At least 20 people died in clashes elsewhere in Egypt.

"Sooner or later I will die. Better to die for my rights than in my bed. Guns don't scare us anymore," said Sara Ahmed, 28, a business manager who joined the demonstrators in Cairo.

"It's not about the Brotherhood, it's about human rights," said Ahmed, one of the few women in the crowd not wearing a headscarf, a sign of piety for Muslim women.

the lady talking about? The right to restrict other people's rights? She needs to be specific. This is about the Muslim Brotherhood and nothing else. They aren't being restricted of any thing more than other groups. She is dying for the Muslim Brotherhood, or she wouldn't be out there.
