Santorum: Voters should get 'very nervous' about Obama on religion.

Santorum : "you should get very nervous, very nervous"
.
... Referring to the Obama administration, Santorum said: "You can see why they don't stand up for religious liberties. It's pretty obvious that they don't think religious liberties are particularly a high priority. When you have the president of the United States referring to the freedom of religion and you have the secretary of State referring to the freedom of religion, not as the freedom of religion but the freedom of worship, you should get very nervous, very nervous.
"Because there's a lot of tyrants around the world who will talk about freedom of worship, but they won't talk about freedom of religion. Freedom of worship is what you do within the four walls of the church. Freedom of religion is what you do outside the four walls of the church. What the president is now seeming to mold, in the image of other elitists who think that they know best, is to limit the role of faith in the public square and your role to live that faith out in your public and private lives.
... Santorum also returned to another socially conservative theme that he had mentioned at almost every recent stop in neighboring Ohio', which holds its primary March 6: what he described as Obama's "assault on all religion in America."

(25,111 posts)that his "God" speaks to him personally. I think he thinks he might be the savior in waiting. That his religion is the only religion that represents the will of the American people. That his party has the private numnber to God. Yes, he is truly insane.

(1,372 posts)That is the freedom to practice as we see fit.
Not to be told to practice the way we're told to.
We alow people the freedom to choose from amongst a variety
of options. The responsibility is to have a society that provides
options to people from which to choose, not to dictate.

(8,224 posts)We have had our primary. I would love to show up at an event and ask him about a Peace Tax Fund, for those of us who take the whole "turn the other cheek", "beating swords into plowshares", and "love your enemy" bits in the Bible seriously. Like the Mennonites, Quakers, Brethern, as well as a fair number of Methodists, and Congregationalists. Would he afford us this freedom of religion?

I'm not anti-religious, far from it. There are many people of faith I respect. It basically comes down to whether they use their religion as a standard to live by or as a club to beat others over the head with.

(8,964 posts)This notion of "religious freedom" is a Trojan Horse issue put in place by those who would aspire to a theocratic form of government, with a very insidious intent of weakening the freedom of choice for individuals to make their own personal decisions. In a nutshell it's "I want to be free to take away your freedom, and if you oppose my you are a tyrant".
catbyte
(34,402 posts)because Santorum's crazy talk is too crazy for even the craziest crazies here in southwest lower Michigan. Santorum's speech in Muskegon was like a bad gospel tent revival meeting. Religion soaked everything--even the economy--and I think it gave even the most ardent Obama haters pause. Besides, home schooling is not a great option for many because the economy has been so bad the past several years that most folks are two-paycheck families. Santorum is living in his own bagger dreamworld. When it's too much for west Michigan, you know the guy is nuts.

LeftishBrit
(41,208 posts)'Freedom of religion is what you do outside the four walls of the church'.
So what he means is that freedom of religion is basically the freedom to deny freedom to others, in the name of HIS religion?
For example: most people, including most religious people, are not in favour of denying people the right to birth control. Indeed, most Catholics aren't, let alone Protestants and members of other faiths. I suppose he thinks that freedom of religion means that he and the hardline bishops should be able to impose this.
How does this differ from a hardline Muslim wanting Sharia law?
Please DO NOT elect that man. He would be possibly a worse danger to the world than Palin would have been, because he is more fervently determined and NOT a quitter; a worse danger than Bush because he's a sincere fanatic.
And to think that our Cabinet Minister Duncan-Smith once collaborated with him on an article about 'compassionate conservativism'!
