UMWA ratifies new contract with Patriot Coal

ST. LOUIS Union mine workers ratified a new contract Friday with Creve Coeur-based Patriot Coal, a key step toward the companys effort to emerge from bankruptcy protection.
The final tally was 85 percent in favor and 15 percent opposed, the United Mine Workers of America said. The union represents about 1,800 Patriot workers.
The membership has made it clear that they are willing to do their part to keep Patriot operating, keep their jobs and ensure that thousands of retirees continue getting the health care they depend on and deserve, UMWA International President Cecil E. Roberts said in a statement.
The contract restores all but $1 per hour in wage cuts, which were as high as $7.53 per hour for some job classifications.

Coal miners and supporters cheer during a protest in Kiener Plaza outside of Peabody Coal on Monday, April 29, 2013. About 2,000 people rallied in Kiener Plaza and then marched down to the federal courthouse where 16 people were peacefully arrested for blocking the road. Monday's protest was the largest in a series of protest that the United Mine Workers of America have organized against Peabody Coal and Patriot Coal over the last several months. (6,852 posts)... in Charlestown, WV. We had a breakfast with the UMW where we first learned of the situation. I was horrified at the video they showed us.
Its good they reached a deal for a better contract.

(208 posts)I don't think the wage listed is for skilled workers, rather un-skilled.
Where did the skilled go, and what happened to their health-care package?
