Christie Signs Bill Banning ‘Gay Conversion’ Therapy

Source: Wall Street Journal

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie signed a bill banning the practice of administering therapy to gay minors to convert them into being straight, according to gay advocates who supported the legislation.

Monday was the deadline for Mr. Christie to act on the bill banning “sexual orientation change efforts,” known as conversion therapy. The bill prohibits professional counselors from administering the therapy to those under the age of 18.

New Jersey is expected to become the first state with a ban in force, according to Garden State Equality, the state’s main gay group. California passed similar legislation, but it’s being challenged legally.

“It’s amazing,” said Troy Stevenson, Garden State’s executive director. “It’s always amazing to have something to protect this many young people.”

Christie is becoming so progressive.

Perhaps he should switch to a Dem since his own party is not going to reward these acts.

I know we should not have to have laws like this but it is good now that it is "on
the books."

BTW I know of a ‘Gay Conversion’ place outside of Salt Lake City that puts
gay young men into baths of ice water and other such tortures in order to
"cure" homosexuals.

These ‘Gay Conversion’ places are scams and they do lots of damage too.

He made a good move here, but make no mistake about who he is, and what party he belongs to.

I saw this, Chris Christie supports allowing medical marijuana for children, which pleased me a lot when it came out, but I also saw plenty of evidence of right-wing attitudes, such as anti-union and anti gun regulations.

It will be interesting to watch him try to bring it all together to appeal to the right-wing crazies for a presidential bid.

Mr. Governor

When you going to sign off on gay marriage? Because I'm still not voting for you in November and I think the only way to get real progress is for everyone to vote Buono.

He is an opportunist - signing progressive-looking bills for re-election purposes - at worst, and maybe a bit of a human being at best.

New Jersey voters will likely appreciate this, and that's what counts in the short term.

Life proliferates only within an environment conducive to that environment. Christie is what Christie is solely because of his environment.

It's the anthropological theory of politics.
