S.A. Councilwoman Chan responds to criticism over anti-gay remarks

Source: KENS 5 TV

SAN ANTONIO -- After a firestorm erupted Friday over her anti-gay remarks, District 9 Councilwoman Elisa Chan on Monday issued her first public statement about controversial comments she made during a staff meeting earlier this year.

Chan's remarks were recorded during a closed meeting regarding San Antonio's nondiscrimination ordinance.

"The comments from the staff meeting on May 21st were and are my personal opinions and thoughts as guaranteed to me by the 1st amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It is unfortunate that a former member of my D9 Council team betrayed the trust of my staff members and me. I will fight, I will always fight for our freedom of speech, especially in a private setting."

Chan's response comes after secretly recorded audio surfaced in a report in the San Antonio Express-News in which Chan can be heard calling homosexuals "disgusting" and saying that gays should not be allowed to adopt children. Chan could also be heard saying: "They're going to be confused. You're going to see two men going into bedroom. You see two women kissing. Is that not confusing?"

should be fired and shunned and verbally abused for saying it. There is no such thing as the right to speech WITHOUT CONSEQUENCES. Never has been and never ever should be.

that anything and everything they say, tweet or belch has a good chance of going public.

For that matter, everyone should understand that consequence these days.

On the tape, Elisa Chan wants to pretend to be naive so that she doesn't have to be honest about her views:

“This is my philosophy, guys,” she says. “Whatever you want to do in your bedroom is none of my business, but do not impose your view on other people, especially becoming policy … because personally, I think it’s just disgusting just to even think about. All the definitions…

“But I don’t want to go against, necessarily … I don’t want to beat up anybody,” she continues. “Maybe what we can do, can we maybe throw some questionable confusions like, OK, this ‘transgender,’ because the definition is so broad… Maybe I say I was not educated on what transgender is about.”
