Dick Van Dyke Rescued From Burning Vehicle

Source: LA List/TMZ

Actor Dick Van Dyke was pulled from a burning car earlier today, after his Jaguar burst into flames on the 101 Freeway in Calabasas. The LA Times reports that the incident happened at about 2:00 p.m., and that Van Dyke wasn't hurt.

According to TMZ, the actor was rescued by a guy named Jason Pennington, who saw the car on fire on the side of the road and rushed over to help. He allegedly spotted Van Dyke hunched over the steering wheel and yanked him out.

Van Dyke was reportedly disoriented but OK. The accident, the cause of which isn't clear, caused two eastbound lanes of the freeway to be shut down.

Dick's wife, Arlene Van Dyke, came to pick him up, and also had the wherewithall to take a Vine of the scene.

That's how old my Dad was when we gently took his car keys away, after a series of little fenderbenders.

but how does "car on fire" equate with a fender-bender? Automotive mechanical failures can happen at any age

I had to move my mother into AL when she was 90. She had given up driving at 82 when she put her car into reverse instead of drive and banged into a tree. The crash injured her sister. Mother was so horrified she gave up driving...my brother drove her everywhere until he had a stroke. So she had to have a safe place to live. Her AL home was very nice and she was well cared for during the years leading up to her death. I was impressed with their professionalism and kindness...

I saw on Sixty Minutes how someone could flip an ATV by lifting the handlebar. The ATV was sideways on a slight slope.

Those three wheeled motorcycles and motorcycles with a side car are deathtraps, too.

Then again, Ford owned Jaguar for a while and some Ford vehicles had problems with ignitions bursting into flame.

Dick Van Dyke Finally Confesses To Zodiac Killings

The beloved TV and film veteran says he enjoyed the Lake Berryessa murder the most.

MALIBU, CA—Saying he had wanted to talk about the subject for years but feared it would damage his career, beloved entertainer Dick Van Dyke confessed Wednesday to being the infamous Zodiac Killer, the serial murderer who terrorized Northern California more than four decades ago.

The 87-year-old actor, singer, comedian, and dancer, best known for his pioneering TV career and roles in films like Mary Poppins and Bye Bye Birdie, spoke at length with reporters about the ghoulish Bay Area execution-style murders, marveling at the fact that he was never caught.

“I am the Zodiac,” said Van Dyke, using the pseudonym of the man who claimed to have killed 37 people and once dared authorities to find him as he continued to “collect slaves for the afterlife.” “The murders, the taunting calls to the police, the letters, the cryptograms sent to local newspapers—that was all me. I just assumed someone would put the pieces together at some point, but I never got credit for any of it.”

“There was brief time when I thought Julie Andrews was on to me,” Van Dyke said as he recalled the filming of Mary Poppins, which reportedly coincided with his earliest murders. “One time she found me in my dressing room caked in sweat and muttering to myself about the thrill of hunting humans, and I could tell it made her uncomfortable. I’ve got to hand it to her, though—right after that she went out there and nailed ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ in one take.”

“But that’s the kind of professional Julie was,” he continued. “She never let stuff like that affect her performance.”

And he almost got away with it too, had he just picked up a different camera. I remember he used to have a Kodak camera back in the day. Before the new ones that have the picture develop right in front of your eyes. Amazing.
