Small plane crashes into river in central Maine town; 2 men escape uninjured

Source: WaPo

A small plane has crashed into a river in a central Maine town shortly after takeoff, but the two men aboard have escaped injury.

Federal and county officials say the plane went down Tuesday afternoon in the Kennebec River in Bingham, a town of about 900 residents 100 miles north of Portland.

State police spokesman Steve McCausland says the 1979 Beechcraft had just taken off from the small Gadabout Gaddis Airport, near the river. The plane was unable to get enough altitude and crashed into about 3 feet of water.

Police say the two men aboard were owner and Monmouth resident Ray Ayer and Wayne resident Paul Householder.
