Russia Says Rebels May Have Staged Alleged Syrian Chemical Attack

Source: REUTERS

* Russia calls for investigation into alleged chemical attack
* Says rocket was released from area controlled by opposition
* Alleged attack could be "provocation" (Adds details, quotes)

MOSCOW, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Russia's Foreign Ministry called for a thorough investigation on Wednesday into reports that Syrian government forces had launched a chemical attack, suggesting that rebels could have staged the assault to provoke international action.

Syria's opposition accused President Bashar al-Assad's forces of gassing many hundreds of people - by one report as many as 1,300 - on Wednesday in what would, if confirmed, be the world's worst chemical weapons attack in decades.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said that its sources in Syria said that a homemade rocket carrying unidentified chemical substances had been launched from an area controlled by the opposition.

"All this cannot but suggest that once again we are dealing with a pre-planned provocation," Lukashevich said in a statement.

I agree that these reports are suspicious, indeed.

Assad has no reason to use chemcial weapons at a time when UN inspectors are on the ground in Syria and because...he is winning against the militant rebels.

Just doesn't add up...

announced the US would for now take no further steps toward direct military involvement in Syria because the opposition is seen to be actually more dangerous to US interests than the Assad regime.

Comes at a time that UN inspectors are in Damascus, at the government's invitation.

Comes at a time that the opposition has been set a series of defeats on the battlefield.

Indeed, this doesn't add up except as a provocation and a desperate effort to turn things around by any means necessary.

While they're killing each other they wont be as focused on killing us or other westerners.
As for a set up, its not like al queda would have any problem killing children to further their cause. They've done it hundreds of times elsewhere.

This can be done readily through applying the appropriate pressure on Turkey and Jordan. Or, perhaps there will be an Egyptian solution in Turkey; if so, peace will come to Syria in a matter of months.

22. Vatican urges caution over Syria chemical arms claims

AFP

The Vatican on Thursday called for caution over opposition allegations that the Syrian regime used chemical weapons in an attack in the suburbs of Damascus -- a charge denied by the authorities.

"There should not be a judgement until there is sufficient proof," Silvano Tomasi, the Vatican's permanent observer at the United Nations in Geneva, said in an interview with Vatican radio.

"What immediate interest would the government in Damascus have in causing such a tragedy?" he asked, adding that the real question was: "Who does this inhuman crime really benefit?"

Tomasi also restated the Vatican's opposition to armed intervention in Syria, calling for negotiations "without preconditions" and a "transition government."

They have been on the wrong side for quite awhile. They support the regimes of both Syria and North Korea that slaughter people. If that isn't enough then their anti-gay laws just in time for the Olympics should make you wonder.
