Colin Powell slams North Carolina voting law

Source: Politico

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell bashed North Carolina’s recent voting law at a forum in the state Thursday, with the governor that signed the bill in the audience.

Powell said the law harms the Republican Party at the CEO Forum in Raleigh, N.C., according to the Raleigh News and Observer.

“It immediately turns off a voting block the Republican Party needs,” Powell said. “These kinds of actions do not build on the base. It just turns people away. … I want to see policies that encourage every American to vote, not make it more difficult to vote.”

The former George W. Bush administration official was the keynote speaker at the event, and took the stage just moments after Gov. Pat McCrory, who signed and defended the bill this month.

Speaking In Front Of North Carolina’s Governor, Colin Powell Blasts State’s New Voting Law

Former secretary of state Colin Powell took aim at North Carolina’s new voting law while speaking at a CEO forum at a Raleigh country club.

“I want to see policies that encourage every American to vote, not make it more difficult to vote,” Powell said.

Although North Carolina’s Republican governor, Pat McCrory, has argued that the new voter law is not intended to suppress minority voters — but rather, to counteract widespread election fraud that he compared to “insider trading,” — Powell affirmed, “You can say what you like, but there is no voter fraud.”

While delivering the strong remarks in front of McCrory and 400 CEOs from different companies, Powell continued by asking, “How can it (voter fraud) be widespread and undetected?”

The new law requires specific “government-issued photo IDs to vote, shortens early voting days and makes it harder for students to cast ballots,” which many critics argue discriminate against minority and young voters – voters who tend to lean left. The law comes less than two months after the Supreme Court struck down a crucial part of the Voting Rights Act that protects against voter discrimination in states with reputations for doing

Whatever one thinks of Powell and his speech at the U.N. concerning Iraq, he is right to call out the GOP on its voter suppression tactics, and he seems to be doing it for the right reason. He deserves to be applauded for taking such a public stance on this issue, regardless of what one thinks of him vis-a-vis his role in making a false case for war against Iraq.

It will take a lot more than a few words to put him back in the good graces of those who know his responsibility for thousands of lives lost and unending enmity in the Middle East.

He can never fully undo the damage he has wrought on earth.
